I’m a multi-disciplinary artist working in youth well-being and I’ve been granted the opportunity to develop my practice through an international residency.
HEIMA is situated in Seyðisfjörður, a small fishing town of 700 on the east coast of Iceland.
The residency was set-up by the founders of the LungA School and Festival. Both independent and artist-led they see “artistic practice as a way of doing, thinking and being in order to cultivate, disturb, distort and transform our notions of aesthetics, learning, perception and good judgement”. It will be a chance for me join in an experiment in sparking social consciousness and self-development through experiential art.
I am one of six artists selected for the 50-day self-directed residency from August to September and will share a live/work space and fish factory.
My intended professional development outcomes are:
To establish a strong methodology for young people to monitor and attend to their wellbeing.
To observe how people work together and develop myself as a sounding board for others to voice ideas, discuss options, and create strategies for preferred ways of being.
To connect with locals and help create music, performances and experiences.
To promote ongoing exchanges between the Australian and Icelandic arts communities.
To keep an online journal to share my experiences back in Australia.
To further integrate my practice of arts/learning/therapy.
This residency is an invaluable opportunity for me to engage and learn from other’s creating educational experiences for young people. I hope, with your help, to be able to contribute to public education reform in Australia in order to address widespread issues like anxiety, depression and mental illness.
Having already raised funds for my flight there and the residency fee, I am seeking support and contributions for living and incidental costs associated with my residency. I would be incredibly grateful for any support given. Remember donations are tax deductible.
