Meg Ryan is looking for love on the internet. She meets a kind and thoughtful stranger in a chat-room- Tom Hanks. It looks and feels like a rom-com, right? Wrong. A weird and wild homage to the loved and hated 90s film descends into camp, uncanny parody; cybersex. A tight hour of laughs, and so-bad-they’re-good Hollywood tropes.
‘You’ve Got Mail’ is presented by Sotto, a Sydney based emerging arts collective dedicated to queer comedy and brooding melodrama. Sotto makes work that exists outside of the mainstream, creating space for artists to get weird and wonderful. Following two successful Sydney seasons, Sotto is touring ‘You’ve Got Mail’ to Perth for the 2020 Fringeworld Festival as part of the Summer Nights program at the Blue Room.
Leading up to the tour in February, Sotto is looking to raise money to help cover the costs of rehearsal, design and travel to make our big trip a bit easier.
With support for the arts dwindling, fighting to maintain a vibrant indie theatre scene is more important than ever. Sotto is fighting so that work that is different, work that is strange and work that is queer doesn’t disappear. ‘You’ve Got Mail’ is a project that has been developing and growing over two years. It’s sold out fringe theatres, been met with critical acclaim and it’s ready to travel the country. It is representative of the art Sotto is fighting to keep alive and art that people want to see.
The costs of taking a show across the country are bigger than anything we’ve encountered at home. Flights, freight and accommodation are our biggest expenses, which add onto the usual rehearsal costs associated with indie theatre.
In order to get this show to Perth looking as weird and wonderful as it has been in Sydney we need a little bit of help.
