We are creating the TV pilot of You & Me, a half hour comic drama that follows the day to day lives of Alice & Joe, a 30 year old couple dealing with life at the tipping point of youth. They’re happy, whatever that means, their careers are satisfying and occasionally stimulating, the sex is stimulating and occasionally mindblowing, and the fights are mindblowing but thankfully occasional. They’re each others best opposite, and most of the time, it’s them against the world.
But times are moving along and the two are facing the giant baby elephant in the room. They are surrounded by friends who seem to be unable to stop multiplying into new humans and families who really want them to do the same. Joe and Alice swing between a keen desire for a family of their own, and an equally strong desire for all of the travelling and going out that not having one allows. But when one particularly fun night of that going out leads to a positive pregnancy test, the decision is made for them.
They deal with the implications of their new reality amongst a myriad of other life hurdles big and small. From the infuriation of daily bureaucratic tangles and failures of social etiquette to the gravity of personal tragedy and emotional turmoil. Whatever it is, they fight hard, but not always successfully, to band together rather than take it out on each other. This is a show that doesn’t aim to shock but doesn’t pull any punches. The comedy is as we find it in life, because it is drawn from real life experiences, found in the most unexpected places. In all of the annoying, embarrassing, tragic, uncomfortable moments.
The show is primarily concerned with the colour and laughs of the daily absurdity of modern existence, but we don’t shy away from what’s not warm and fuzzy either. Whether it’s miscarriage, divorce or cancer, we deal with it, and laugh at it, because Alice and Joe do, because they have to, because we all do to get through.
Influenced by the shooting style and stand alone segments of Louie, with the observational humour of Outnumbered and This is 40, and the commitment to depth of shows such as Transparent, You & Me will be a colourful, visceral, naturalistic warts and all depiction of a modern 30 something relationship. Hand held, versatile camera gear and a minimal crew mean we can put performance and verisimilitude first & foremost, aiming for truthful and responsive filmmaking rather than a more conventional style.
You & Me will be written and directed by Ian Meadows (Offspring, The Moodys, The Turning) with a diverse cast including Ash Ricardo (Party Tricks, Molly) Geoff Morrell (Catching Milat, Cloudstreet), Elaine Crombie (8MMM), Heather Mitchell (Spirited, Power Games) Chum Ehelepola (The Straits) & Andrew McFarlane (Devils Playground).
You & Me will, in spite of its intimate scale and streamlined production, feature some of the most exciting talent in the country.
