We have exciting plans for Van Diemen’s Band’s inaugural series!

Australian born and now Italian-based cello virtuoso Catherine Jones joins as soloist for two concerts in the north and south of the state as part of Ten Days on the Island Festival preceded by our debut CD recording for ABC Classics.

Following that we present ‘Tin Shed Baroque’, a program of Arias for Baritone with baroque specialist David Greco set in the the striking fascinating surrounds of Spring Bay Mill in Triabunna.

With a passionate interest in training the next generation of musicians in Historically Informed Performance practice, we have invited some of our the best international artists to teach in specially organised education workshops so that young Australians can have access to the world’s top musicians.

Tasmanian audiences have shown great enthusiasm for early music, yet until now, they did not have their own dedicated orchestra. Van Diemen’s Band combines musicological research and a dedication to excellence in performance in the field of early music. Our musicians who, between them, have many decades of baroque music-making experience, recognise the importance of training the next generations in the practice.

With your help, VDB can bring all Tasmanians access to outstanding performances and education initiatives of an international standard and provide , providing opportunities for local musicians to learn and develop their skills with national and international artists of the highest calibre.

Why do we need your help? Your donations will be used for start-up and production costs involved in producing concerts, recordings and education workshops, flying artists from Europe and interstate for the concerts and recordings. Funds will be used for artists fees, venue hire, production costs , travel, insurance, setting up a website, developing infrastructure, and an excellent cohesive marketing strategy so that the concerts have maximum impact to develop audiences and enthusiasm.

With your help, we will be able to realise inaugural concerts of the highest international standard, and capture the excitement and enthusiasm of a national and indeed an international audience with our exciting debut CD release.

VAN DIEMEN’S BAND

Van Diemen’s Band is an exciting new Tasmanian chamber orchestra dedicated to the historically informed performance of music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Made up of some of the nation’s most highly respected early music specialists, whether based in Australia or overseas, VDB combines musicological research and high-level performance by musicians who, between them, have many decades of baroque music-making experience.

A flexible ensemble, VDB can vary in size from a chamber group to a mid-eighteenth century orchestra. Working with regular guest directors, VDB explores the creativity and freedom of expression in music of the baroque and plays to the highest international standards.

Seeing the vital importance of education, VDB has a mission to train the next generation of Tasmanian and national musicians through workshops and an ‘academy’-style education program that culminates in professional playing opportunities.
