Big Fork Theatre is a community focused not for profit improvised theatre company that produces regular shows and runs Brisbane’s only Chicago-style improv training school.
Every Friday, our wonderful audience fill the Paddington Substation (where we perform!) with their laughter, and the performers fill the stage with characters and scenes. Due to the success of our weekly show, Big Fork Fridays (which regularly sells out), and our growth as a company, we want to improve the show experience for the audience and the performers. Plus in August, we are launching a second show to bring Brisbane more opportunities to have a laugh! Our shows are all staffed by our community, volunteering their time.
Thanks to our community we have grown to the point where we can look to invest more in the fantastic and unique heritage listed Paddington Substation space, and further activate its potential as a small performing arts space. This will complement its other functions as a workshop and gallery space.
We have already started work on this project – last year, we won a grant to buy new lights and fans to permanently install at the heritage-listed Paddington Substation.
The next steps are:
– Buying comfortable padded and stackable audience chairs
– Installing a lighting rig
– Buying appropriate stage chairs
The total cost of these upgrades is $6000. We can cover half of this, but we need your help to cover the rest.
We believe spaces like this matter, because Brisbane and its history matters. We believe appropriate and respectful use of spaces like this, such as for the performing arts, allow our heritage to be alive in a way it otherwise cannot be. The space is now run by Communify, and previously was run by Hands on Art – the deep connection to community focused work in the Paddington area is essential, and it is a mission shared by Big Fork Theatre. As a not for profit co-operative, the growth and strength of our community is a fundamental part of our objective as a company.
