UNDERTOW is the story of Claire and Dan, a couple dealing with the heartbreak of stillbirth, who become involved with teenager Angie. When Claire discovers Angie is pregnant, she develops an increasingly irrational obsession that puts everyone’s lives in danger. Only when confronted by the explosive secret behind Angie’s pregnancy can Claire and Dan begin to heal.

Stillbirth and miscarriage are tragically common. During the film’s development we have been amazed and touched by the number of women, and men, who have offered up their own story of loss – something that continues to haunt them for the rest of their lives.

We are working with The Stillbirth Foundation to represent this issue in a sensitive and authentic way.

UNDERTOW is a psychological thriller aimed at a sophisticated adult audience who enjoyed films such as BLACK SWAN, THE HUNT and WISH YOU WERE HERE. It’s a female-led story with a female creative team; written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Miranda Nation, produced by Lyn Norfor, Emerald Productions and executive produced by Liz Watts. Film Victoria and the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund are the key financial partners.

We will be shooting the film in Geelong and the surrounding local coastal areas in March/ April 2017. The film will showcase the unique character and history of Geelong and the stunning Surf Coast. We have strong support from the City of Greater Geelong Council, the Committee for Geelong and the Geelong Chamber of Commerce.

We have a wonderful crew including DOP Bonnie Elliott (THESE FINAL HOURS, THE TURNING, SPEAR, HUNTERS,) and production designer Penny Southgate (PLEASE LIKE ME, KATH & KIMDERELLA , DOWNRIVER).

With the majority of funds committed, we need to raise the final amount so as to bring our vision to the screen. The funds raised will be spent on a number of areas including:
* Camera – Funds raised will help us afford our camera of choice, the Alexa mini, to create a stunning cinematic look.
* Art Department – Funds raised will contribute to creating the bold and unique production design of the film.
* Music – The soundtrack will be very important, featuring a number of local artists and bands; funds raised will help pay for licensing specific tracks.

UNDERTOW will premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in July 2018 with a red carpet, grand premiere and the accompanying media coverage, screening to a large local audience and international guests.

Miranda and Lyn met in 2010 at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and began collaborating on UNDERTOW.

In 2012, they were selected for Screen Australia’s highly competitive Springboard Program and their short film, PERCEPTION, was created as a calling card for the feature. PERCEPTION won Best Short Film at the 2013 Sydney Film Festival, was nominated for a 2014 AACTA Award and had its international premiere at Clermont-Ferrand in 2014.

Miranda is an award-winning writer-director who has combined her passions for story-telling and social justice on diverse projects; from devising theatre with trafficked women, to running film workshops in a refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border. Originally training as an actor, Miranda wrote and directed her first short film in Paris while studying at Jacques Lecoq. She is especially driven to create strong complex roles for women.

Lyn is one of the three founding partners of Emerald Productions and her credits as a producer encompass drama and documentary film and television productions. Her commercial work includes TVCs, digital content and corporate projects. Emerald has developed their COBALT slate for debut female directors with a diverse and bold range of projects.
