Community Arts & Cultural Development

Together – Remotely

Together – Remotely is a year-round online literary Festival, featuring the world’s best – alongside exciting new – writers from Australia and across the globe in dynamic, expertly curated, LIVE events.

Days Left

Together – Remotely was born out of a desire to support the literary community hard-hit economically by the COVID-19 lockdowns. Unlike other online literary events, T-R supports its guests with the same honorarium they would receive at a real-world Festival. In addition, T-R promotes book sales with guest authors’ books available for sale on the site, through a partnership with one of Australia’s oldest independent booksellers, Gleebooks.

Envisioned and built by internationally renowned Festival Director, Caro Llewellyn, Together – Remotely has all the hallmarks of a great real-world Festival program and offers writers a replacement source of income from live events and festivals cancelled after COVID-19.

T-R is building a world-wide online literary community with authors + audiences alike, joining-in from across the globe. Caro is bringing all her experience + international contacts to present the most dynamic, inclusive and horizon-expanding program of LIVE online events to readers no matter where they live.

Originally envisioned as a short-term solution to COVID-19 lockdowns, Together – Remotely is here for the long-term. Overwhelmed by responses from people in rural and regional areas and those living with disabilities – audiences who for too long have been excluded from literary events with world-class writers – have taken to Together – Remotely with gusto.

Caro who has devoted her professional career to widening the embrace of literary programs and experiences, so they are available and welcoming to diverse audiences, now sees Together – Remotely as the next exciting chapter of opening up rich cultural experiences and making them available to communities and people everywhere, no matter their geographic proximity or physical ability.

Caro herself has limited mobility from MS, so understands how difficult it can be to turn up to exciting real-world events and sees this as an important initiative for people living with disabilities, so they too can experience the very best literary programming.

Together – Remotely was dreamed up on a Thursday morning at 3am + launched with its first live online event six days later. Envisioned + built by its author-founder with very limited web-building experience, the site looks great + is an adequate opening gambit, but as the programs grow, there’s critical work to be done to improve the user-experience + navigation. Your donation will go towards helping develop the site to include important new navigational tools + user experiences. It will also help develop new opportunities for revenue raising to ensure the long-term viability of the program to sustain + nourish diverse communities. It’ll also help us pay for more writers + develop the program even further.

Not only is Together – Remotely serving writers, readers, publishers + other word-based creatives, it’s also serving the planet by offering the very best literary experiences with an almost zero carbon footprint. T-R goes lightly upon the world while offering world-class experiences for people everywhere.

Caro Llewellyn is the author of The Stella Prize shortlisted memoir, Diving into Glass (Hamish Hamilton 2019). She’s the former artistic director of Sydney Writers’ Festival, PEN World Voices Festival (New York City), the New Literature from Europe Festival (NYC) and Festival des Écrivains du Monde (Paris). Her previous books include Jobs For The Girls, Fresh! and My One True Love. is a platform to support writers, booksellers, and publishers hit by the cancellation of events and Festivals due to COVID-19 social distancing. This LIVE year-round program of online events pays all its guests the standard literary festival fee of $200 and supports book sales through a partnership with independent bookseller, Gleebooks.

Together-Remotely is a curated program and just like the real-world literary Festivals I used to run, I’ll be bringing all my experience, expertise and amazing contact book to bring the world’s best and most exciting writers LIVE to your home. Guests have included: Colum McCann, Andrew Sean Greer, Polly Samson, Suzanne Leal, Jessica Pearce Rotondi, Christos Tsiolkas, Erin Hortle, Kate Kruimink…with many more to come.
