The Three Seas

The Three Seas Australasian Tour

The Three Seas are embarking on a new voyage! This tour will bring Australian and Bengali band members together again with dates set for the 2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival before touring through SE Asia & OZ.

Days Left

Led by Artistic Director Matt Keegan, The Three Seas is an international, intercultural music project that fuses modern Australian jazz with the West Bengali folk tradition to create a unique and soulful sonic imprint that radiates joy.

Drawing on the earthy tones of north Indian folk music with a focus on the Baul tradition, The Three Seas combines contemporary jazz and western production aesthetics to playfully create new pathways and transport audiences into new musical worlds.

A project ten years in the making, the remarkable members of The Three Seas have been drawn together by a deep love of music, a mutual respect for their distinct and diverse cultural origins and a shared passion for creating songs that resonate universally.

The band includes Matt Keegan (saxophone, clarinet), Raju Da Baul (vocals, khamak), Deoashish Mothey (vocals, dotora, esraj, guitar) Steve Elphick (bass) Gaurab Gaboo Chatterjee (dubki, drums).

The band has been experiencing success in recent years and we are keen to keep the momentum going. With members based in India and Australia, each tour takes planning and patience, but our unique music and uplifting performances are well worth the wait!

Funds will go towards touring costs with dates scheduled for Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia as well as NZ and Australia.

Rarely does a band like The Three Seas come along. New and ancient music combine to create a universal sound that radiates joy.

Soaring Baul vocals, a menagerie of traditional stringed instrument played Himalayan style and danceable West Bengali beats are juxtaposed against the deep groove and swelling bass lines of the baritone saxophone.

An international collaboration promoting inter-cultural harmony, the diverse and remarkable backgrounds of The Three Seas (based in Australia and West Bengal), has led to the release of two critically acclaimed albums; Haveli (2014) & Fathers, Sons & Brothers (2018).

The ensemble has toured twice in Australia (2017 & 2018) including performances at the Parramasala Festival, Oz Asia Festival, Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, Art Gallery of NSW, and the Australian National Maritime Museum for the Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA).

The band toured to India for the first time in December 2018, performing seven shows nationally to enthusiastic capacity crowds including a live television broadcast and performances at the Mumbai Royal Opera House, Kochi-Mizuris Biennale and the Indian Museum in Kolkata.

Led by award winning saxophonist/composer and Artistic Director of The Three Seas, Matt Keegan, the group also features virtuosic Baul singer Raju Das (vocals/khamak), Deo Ashis Mothey of Nepalese heritage (vocals/esraj/dotora), Australian jazz luminary Steve Elphick (bass), and renowned Bengali rock drummer Gaurab Chatterjee (kit drums/dubki).
