This Wild Song is an Australia wide project celebrating female visual artists through portraits, interviews, exhibitions and events. Now including over 100 artists the project aims to increase the visibility of female artists and highlights how closely an artist’s identity is tied to their creative output. TWS celebrates the strong female leaders in the arts community and their creative vision. The project features award-winning artists from varying backgrounds, using a diverse range of mediums and at different career stages. They are unified by their unique voices, distinct style and their exceptional artistic practices.

I’m raising funds to cover the costs of my first major Melbourne exhibition at the Town Hall Gallery (Hawthorn) 1st of September – 21st of October 2018. The exhibition consists of 25 photographic portraits accompanied by an art work by each artist featured in a portrait.

A major motivation for creating This Wild Song was to address and promote equality in the arts. In Australia, the ratio of Visual Arts Degree Graduates in 2014 was 74% female, 26% male. Yet solo exhibitions by contemporary artists held in state museums in the same year were by 34% female and 59% male (http://www.thecountessreport.com.au). In 2015, female artists earned half the median creative income of male artists, despite spending similar amounts of their time on creative practice (Arts Nation, An Overview of Australian Arts, 2015 Edition). Many of the artists in This Wild Song are mothers so their practice is impacted during these child-rearing years. This research demonstrates that opportunities are limited for women artists, especially mother artists. TWS voices these issues and contributes to the art community in a positive way.

TWS is a not for profit, and currently unfunded, project. I have already completed the 25 portraits and for the exhibition to go ahead I’m raising funds to cover the costs of printing and mounting the portraits. With thanks to our sponsors and the support of Town Hall Gallery we now only need to raise $7,000.

A variety of events will be held throughout the exhibition providing opportunities to engage with the art works and artists. Such as artist talks, live drawing performance by Gosia Wlodarczak and some special events to be announced…

Your donation not only helps us to realise this exhibition but also provides support to all of the 100+ artists a part of TWS.

I am a photographic and new media artist living and working in Melbourne.

I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (majoring in photography) with distinction in 1998, since then I’ve exhibited extensively and have been selected in numerous prizes throughout Australia. I am passionate about supporting and promoting Australian women artists, and to do this I have created onefourfour and This Wild Song which are projects that create opportunities for the artists to collaborate with peers, expand their audiences, create new work and promote their art.
