The Greenhouse

THE GREENHOUSE is a queer magic realist family drama. It is a celebration of life, joy and tragedy; a story about alternative families, taking risks and once-in-a-lifetime love.

The Greenhouse tells the tale of Beth Tweedy-Bell and her widowed mother Ruth, who are struggling to connect since the loss of Beth’s other mother Lillian.

On the eve of Ruth’s 60th birthday, Beth finds a tunnel that takes her into the past and allows her to revisit and rediscover the magical memories of her outrageous siblings and their idiosyncratic Mums … But soon the past reveals a more sinister agenda and when their mother flees into it with no plans of return, Beth and her siblings must put aside their differences and work together to rescue her…

We believe 2017 is a good year to tell an honest story about an outrageously tenacious, culturally-diverse, queerer than queer and feminist-as-fuck Australian family.

God knows it’s time for our national screens to embrace work that represents our incredible and progressive population, and we want our film to move and breathe with the passion and veracity of its creators. Tom’s vision is for a film that feels wonderful, melancholy and challenging. That will make you laugh hard and cry harder. A film that reveals the strength and universality of family, whatever form it takes.

We seriously believe in our film but we literally can’t do it without you. You know how much these babies cost, and although we don’t need THAT much money, we need SOME so our cast and crew can eat food (or they’ll starve), so our costume designer can dress the actors (or they’ll be naked), so the location owners are happy (or they’ll kick us out) and basically so the world of The Greenhouse and its inhabitants can really happen.

A feature film is by any stretch a mammoth undertaking – The Greenhouse even more so, due to the fact that we are working with a shoestring budget. The film was developed in the Masters of Screen Arts at the Australian, Film, Television and Radio School. We will be making it with the continued support of AFTRS, donated time and resources from friends and family, and the love and generosity of our crew and cast who will mostly be working for free.

We need the support of those that are passionate about the arts and film, about family, about fostering the careers and talents of emerging practitioners and really, truly we need the support of people who believe in the representation of diverse and LGBQTI people. Our national cinema has always needed diversity in its voices but now, more than ever is the time for these stories to be heard.

We are a collective of talented and ambitious creatives who have spent years making films together, always taking on the next big challenge and always believing in the work we make. The Greenhouse is a huge step for us, but god damn what an exciting step it is.

Please help us make The Greenhouse and help us bring this technicolour, titanic celebration of life to the screen.

Tom was raised on the South Coast of Australia in a family bigger and more dysfunctional than yours. He was accepted into the Bachelor of Film and Television Production at the Victorian College of the Arts at 17 and studied there for three years.

While at the VCA his 2011 short ‘the Gay Son’ won the Byron Bay Queer Film Festival and was runner-up at the St Kilda Film Festival. After a year off, where he wrote a lot and felt very alone, he was accepted into the Graduate Diploma of Directing at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School where he graduated with shorts ‘Sleight’ and ‘Back to Earth’, which was accepted into Flickers: The Rhode Island International Film Festival 2015, Cinequest 2016, Down Under Berlin 2016 and won the Gold Remi at Worldfest: Houston 2016. He also shot a film clip for Oisima’s ‘Sun of Truth’ and Jack River’s ‘Palo Alto’, both of which premiered on DIY Mag. In 2015 Tom and his team received a MetroScreen grant and made ‘Fish River’ a short thriller, currently near completion. He is currently doing his Masters in Screen Arts at AFTRS, preparing to shoot The Greenhouse, and stress cleans most days.
