“The Anchor Theatre Company lends heart to the future of theatre that is not manacled by tradition, but has learnt from it.” – Peter Wilkins, Canberra Critic Circle
WHAT IS THE ACHOR?
THE ANCHOR is a theatre company founded by three female theatre makers (all NIDA post-graduate) Jessica Arthur is a Directing Associate at Sydney Theatre Company, Katie Cawthorne is the Artistic Director and co-CEO of Canberra Youth Theatre and Laura Lethlean is a published playwright and theatre-maker.
Jess, Katie and Laura met during their Masters of Fine Arts at NIDA in 2014. Immediately upon graduating, they formed THE ANCHOR to produce Laura’s play How Are You for the Canberra Design Festival. Four years later, each individual founder has established a firm foothold in the industry, and they plan to use their consolidated skills to come together to produce compelling and necessary theatre for a new generation of theatre-goers.
Our next project: Two Hearts
Two Hearts is a one-act play that tells the story of choice and desire through a couple’s experience with abortion. By presenting this highly private and personal experience to an audience, the play uses humour, emotion and authenticity to inform a broader discussion about unwanted pregnancy in Australia. The play is intimate, atmospheric and injects a powerful young voice onto the Australian stage.
The Anchor makes theatre that invites an alternative to the highly politicised language around issues that would seek to divide us. By presenting a balanced, authentic, humorous and accessible story, Two Hearts works to create a secure space for people to better understand this intimate and personal experience.
This is a play with courage, but we need help to give Two Hearts a pulse. The Anchor is seeking financial support to tell this incredibly important story to Australian audiences.
We aim to raise $3000. Every cent will go towards paying artists for their time and expertise, to help us to bring this ambitious play to Australian audiences.
Donors to this play will be assisting in two ways:
1. You will be supporting skilled, talented and ambitious female theatre makers to create work that matters
2. You will enable a story to be told that may open up a greater dialogue around a taboo issue, thus contributing to lasting change in attitudes around rights and access to abortion.
The Anchor believes that theatre is the best way to humanise politics. It’s 2018 and two out of six states in Australia still regard abortion as a criminal act. However, it is estimated that between one quarter and one third of Australian women will have an abortion in their lifetime. Each year, tens of thousands of Australian women and men make the choice to undergo the procedure, yet due to conservative laws and taboo attitudes around the issue, there are declining spaces to talk about these experiences. By presenting a balanced, authentic, humorous and accessible story, Two Hearts works to create a secure space for people to better understand these experiences.
