Emily and her son Lachie see beneath Kyle’s stern and self-governing persona. He is someone very much caught in the webbing of modernity, isolated by disillusionment and individualism that is further emphasised through the sprawling and barren landscapes of inland Australia.
Amidst this isolation, Kyle has found a refuge in Emily and Lachie since the moment he was picked up on the side of a rural road. But now, the precious farm house has been sold and everyone is leaving, including him––
The imminence of leaving in this story parallels with the larger, overarching reality of death—making a case for closer, more meaningful relationships in the face of a temporary existence.
