“I stand energised not only by the quality of the art Syzygy presents, but by their youthful dynamism, their unrelenting directness, and the strength and singularity of their artistic vision” – Limelight Magazine, 2013
Since forming in 2009, Syzygy Ensemble has quickly established a national reputation for performances of 20th and 21st-century chamber music of the highest quality. Our ongoing quest is to present to our audiences established musical masterpieces of the last 100 years, while also nurturing the creation of the masterpieces of tomorrow. To this end, in the last five years we have presented 106 pieces to our national audiences, 36 of which have been Australia premieres.
In 2015, we are presenting our largest number of annual commissions yet – 4 new pieces especially written for Syzygy – combined with other established masterworks, and spread out across our three-concert series at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Your donation will ensure that you have a lasting role in national and international compositional history, by helping fund the litany of costs that are involved in getting these brand new works to the stage and out into the world for the first time. These include the fees paid to the artists to learn and perform the works, the marketing costs involved in promoting the concerts, the staging costs (including videography to present the works in the best possible context), and – while the writing of the pieces is separately funded – any additional support we can give the composers during the collaborative process.
Syzygy’s year also involves two other exciting ‘firsts’: the recording and production of our debut CD, featuring specially commissioned works by established composers Brenton Broadstock and Gordon Kerry; and a large-scale collaboration with long-time supporter Dr Katy Abbott and the Sydney-based ‘Song Company’, resulting in a major work to be premiered our 2016/17 season.
Your donation enables these projects to come to successful fruition and allows you to help shape the future direction of music creation in Australia.
