Our aim is to raise funds for and promote the Choir of St James’. One of the finest ensembles in Australia, with a world-class reputation, the Choir has many collaborations (SSO, Opera Australia and the finest ensembles in Sydney), and community engagements.
Our performances not only support the livelihoods of our musicians but provide a pivotal role in the arts scene in Sydney and beyond. We strongly believe in and continue to support local talent in these difficult times by providing a venue and platform for performance. The Friends of Music also commission the writing of new music, with brilliant composers within the group.
We aspire to be pivotal providers to the Australian arts scene.

Comprising professional singers and composers, the world renowned Choir is a conduit for aspiring young musicians to enter the domestic and international music scene by offering choral scholarships. Members of the choir are some of the most sought after singers and composers in Australia.

For the Bicentenary of our iconic building, the Choir commissioned a new orchestral/choral work by renowned UK composer Gabriel Jackson. Our aim is to create a world premiere recording and performance of this new masterpiece. This would cement the Choir’s position as a world-class ensemble, based in the heart of Sydney. This also sows the seed for inspiring and commissioning new works by emerging local composers.

Commissioning new work for our audiences is pivotal, and providing worldwide audiences with performances of the Choir, and working towards a world premiere performance and recording is priceless.

This initiative is an exciting way for donors to partner with us on the artistic journey, develop a close and rewarding relationship with the Choir and build the capacity of the Friends of Music beyond its auspicious and humble foundations.

Choral music is the lifeblood of our musicians and supporters. Performances came to a halt with COVID-19 restrictions. Each year the Choir presents a concert series. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this has effectively been cancelled. As we work toward the world premiere recording and performance, we will also look at recording performances of some of the 2020 Concert Series and presenting them online as virtual concerts.

We hope you will consider deeply in your hearts in this difficult time, and be encouraged by the wonderful music that will be shared with you through your generous donations. We want to share this with you.

You can follow our progress on our website www.friendsofmusicsydney.com.au and Facebook page @friendsofmusicstjamessydney

If you have not had the privilege of hearing one of the finest Choirs in Australia sing, then you deserve to.
We thank you for your generous support.

The Friends of Music at St James’ (FOM) was formed in 2011 by a group of passionate musicians and music lovers. We help to actively support the music programme performed in Sydney’s historic St James’ Church.

The Choir is the lifeblood of the ministry at St James’. A world-class choir which has toured internationally to England, France, Italy, Austria and Singapore. The Choir has sung concerts throughout Australia, and has had the privilege of singing at the Dawn Service in Gallipoli as the ANZAC Choir, twice. The Choir performs a concert series each year.

The Choir comprises professional singers, and it is a conduit for aspiring young musicians to enter the professional music scene, by offering choral scholarships. It is a thriving instrument of education, with members of the choir being some of the most sought after singers in Australia. The Friends of Music also commission the writing of new music, with brilliant talent singing in the group.

Our aim is to actively promote and raise funds for the Choir, so we can share our performances to the wider community and continue supporting local talent. We aspire to be pivotal providers to the Australian arts and music scene.
