In the wake of a tragedy, 21-year-old Charlie takes her best friend Emma on a road trip. Hoping it will provide what they need to heal and move on, Charlie must come to terms with the longevity of her friend’s grief, ultimately learning that even the most profound bonds can’t fix life’s worst hardships. Sometimes all you can do is just be there to hold hands.

Sunburn is an AFTRS graduation film created by a team of talented emerging Australian film-makers. Directed by Jaslyn Mairs and written by Claudia Bailey, this project is the culmination of three years in Screen Production, a showcase of their skills and talent. It is a short film (10 minutes) being created for distribution at film festivals for national and international audiences.

This is an important film about friendship in the wake of tragedy. Young film makers and actors examining the hardships of loss weighed against the invaluable beauty of friendship. A uniquely fresh-faced reflection of how our generation deals with grief.

WHY DONATE?

The ‘coming of age genre’ holds numerous untouched classics that examine many of the varied and challenging facets of youth and the process of maturing. What makes Sunburn truly unique however is the perspective of the creatives involved.

Our generation faces many challenges unique to our time, and the creatives involved in this project have an intimate understanding of how these challenges manifest in our lives, and more importantly, the ways we deal and confront them. Sunburn aims to take the life experiences of our writer director duo, and craft a deeply personal story that draws on real hardships.

By donating you are supporting a story of female friendship as told by woman creatives. This project is being created for the thousands of young people who are eager to make their perspectives and voices heard.

I am an emerging Sydney based director, currently studying at the Australian Film and television radio school.

Storytelling and its powerful ability to create affect has always been a major part of my life. Traversing through the written worlds of JK Rowlings in my childhood, exploring expression through painting and theatre in high-school, and now the power of cinema in further studies.

I believe that every person has a story worthy of telling, that each life holds value and is worth exploration. Taking this love of humanity and translating it through the median of cinema provides a wonderful opportunity to tell intimate and honest stories. My particular set of life experiences has left me particularly fascinated in the nuance and minutiae of growing up. Youth is a wonderful cacophony of emotion and life-defining events, it’s the molten stew that sets each person upon their journey through this life.

Through cinema I hope to share intimacy between characters, stories and audience. As a method for creating new empathy between peoples, there is no greater weapon than the stories we craft, and my median is cinema.
