She Is Vigilante is an exercise in opening doors, giving voice and performance-space to artists who are not usually granted access.

The short plays featured come from 6 writers from a variety of disciplines, including television, performance and multimedia and our performers have been sourced via open callout, creating an ensemble of local, largely untrained women.

Hi we’re Krystalla Pearce and Bridget Balodis, and our latest work She Is Vigilante opens on the 7th of November. This series of five short plays has been over a year in the making and we’re thrilled to share it with you!

WHY MAKE THIS SHOW?
She is Vigilante is a 75 minute collection of five short plays about women vigilantes. The works are written by 6 Victorian women writers, selected through an anonymous call-out process.

This work engages with the history and people of St Kilda, Melbourne. Through community outreach we have created a performing ensemble of 13 women who range in age from 20-70+ and come from a variety of lived experiences.

By placing these women into narratives of empowerment, strength and change we aim to change perceptions about the limits of their bodies; for them and for our audiences. We see presenting complex women characters and diverse bodies on stage as ways of changing how women are perceived – where they have been devalued or overlooked, they may become inspiring or even scary.

WHY HELP US?
Even though we have been lucky to receive some funding, the budget for independent work is always very tight and we still have a significant shortfall. We are paying a team of 26 people and also working in a space that will require a thoughtful and flexible design. This is a huge work for us, it’s political, urgent and timely, and we want support our team as best we can!

We are looking to raise a final $2000 by the 31st of October.

The money we raise will help us with funding publicity, boosting our performer fees and….hiring a cheese costume. Our team are bringing such heart to this project and we want them to be able to share that with audiences

You can also help by coming to show and inviting your friends by sharing the event listing:

I’m a director who has just returned to Melbourne after two years living in New York. I work independently and am part of New Working Group, a collective of artist working primarily in new writing. I work as a director, devisor, producer and educator, striving to make work that brings audiences and performers closer together.

In the past five years I have presented work independently in New York and Melbourne and also with the Next Wave Festival (2012, 2014, 2016), Red Stitch, La Boite Indie, You Are Here and Penrith Arts Centre.

I have been the recipient of the Ian Potter traveling scholarship, Mike Walsh Fellowship and Dame Joan Sutherland Fund Award and was part of Melbourne Theatre Company’s Women Directors Program in 2014.
