Seen & Heard Cabaret 2018 Tour

Storyteller and burlesque queen Becky Lou hosts an incredible line-up of Australian cabaret and variety artists willing to embrace their vulnerability and share personal stories.

Days Left

Becky Lou has trawled queer parties, cabaret clubs, burlesque bars and their dressing rooms to bring together a stunning variety show, featuring some of Australia’s most exciting neo-cabaret artists, each selected for their ability to show audiences both the skilled artiste and the human beneath the sequins and bravado. Within the course of a show, each performer presents an act from their repertoire and also shares a personal story.

Seen & Heard has been invited to present a season at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, at one of it’s largest venue operations, Underbelly, for a four week season in August, which will be preceded by short seasons in Melbourne and Sydney in July.

Since it’s debut in 2015, Seen & Heard has received critical, industry and audience acclaim and won the award for Best Cabaret at Melbourne Fringe 2017. The opportunity to take the concept to an international audience is a timely, exciting development in the life of the show.

Seen & Heard asks artists from highly physical and visual disciplines to embrace vulnerability. Writing and presenting personal narrative and embracing the challenge of stripping away artifice on stage is an exciting process for the artists and promotes a rare sense of intimacy between performer and audience. It provides an inclusive opportunity to hear and relate to stories from a diverse group of unique individuals.

Taking Seen & Heard to an international festival will allow us to bring our award-winning format to new audiences. It’s a chance to share a slice of Melbourne’s unique and exciting cabaret scene with the international arts community, allowing performers valuable opportunities for networking, showcasing and artistic cross-pollination.

We are asking for assistance in raising the funds to present our 2018 tour, which will include a full run at Edinburgh Fringe and two short seasons in Melbourne and Sydney.

Donations will go towards subsidising the costs of producing and touring, which include;

Venue hire fees
Edinburgh Fringe Registration Fee
Poster and flyer printing and distribution
Print and social media advertising
Venue technicians
Domestic and International flights for six ensemble members
Accommodation for six ensemble members
Travel and living expenses
Filming and photography
PR and administrative costs

Every contribution will count towards making our 2018 tour possible, bringing the show to Sydney and Edinburgh for the first time and sharing our formidable Melbourne cabaret and storytelling mavericks with the world!

“What makes this show outstanding is the wonderful selection of natural storytellers who have you hooked on their every word, gripped by snippets of their real lives that have you in barrels of laughter and on the verge of tears.” – The West Australian

A stunning showcase of song, circus, dance, striptease and vaudeville, combined with the confessional art of storytelling.

Since 2015, the show has toured five seasons across Melbourne Fringe, Perth Fringe World and Adelaide Fringe Festival and featured performances from cabaret, drag, burlesque, contemporary dance, popular music and circus artists, including Wes Snelling/Tina del Twist, Karen From Finance, Anna Lumb, Mojo Juju, Mama Alto, Frankie Valentine, Clara Cupcakes, Reuben Kaye, Zelia Rose, Ash Baroque, Lillian Starr, Liz Cahalan of Bey Dance, Jessica McKerlie, Chase Paradise, Honey B. Goode, Jessamae St James, Ruby Slippers, Mema Sifa and Lucy Frost.

The show’s producer and curator, Becky Lou has been performing self-devised work within Australia’s neo-burlesque scene since 2007. A resident performer at Melbourne venues Red Bennies and Burlesque Bar until their closures, she became one of the most in-demand performers at the height of Australia’s burlesque revival. A Miss Burlesque Australia national finalist (2010 and 2013), she has been described as ‘one of the High-Priestesses of Australian Burlesque’.

Her debut solo show Shake, an exploration in combining neo-burlesque with personal storytelling, was nominated for Best Cabaret at Perth Fringe World 2015, Best Production at Montreal Fringe 2016 and received critical acclaim during seasons in Adelaide and Melbourne. Her second solo show, Real Woman (2017), further developed her intimate, confessional storytelling style. In 2015 she curated and produced the first season of Seen & Heard, in which she has worked closely with a diverse selection of cabaret artists to explore storytelling in a variety show context. Seen & Heard has been presented in Fringe Festival seasons across the country each year since, winning Melbourne Fringe’s Best Cabaret award in 2017.

Becky Lou continues to perform, produce cabaret events, mentor emerging performers and is currently Co-Chair of the Green Room Awards Association’s Cabaret Panel.
