RUMPUS is a collective season of work by Adelaide’s independent companies and makers, curated by a panel of artists. It will consist of 4 shows over 4 months as well as 2 creative developments and will take place at an industrial space in Bowden, two minutes from Adelaide’s CBD.

RUMPUS emerged from community meetings with Adelaide’s independent theatre artists. The independent scene has long struggled with atomisation; isolation from each other whilst facing similar struggles: limited resources and the lack of a thriving second tier in our industry. RUMPUS is a collective effort towards our shared goal: an exciting season of work in a new venue in which we can pool our resources, build new audiences, and consolidate our efforts to produce bold, diverse and innovative work.

This first season of RUMPUS will kick off with its first show in September and will run through to December.

RUMPUS is not a new theatre company, but capitalises on the existing creative energy of the sector and offers opportunities for audiences and makers to meet by sharing the skills, labour and time required to produce work. RUMPUS will build audiences’ awareness and raise the profile of independent theatre makers by bringing a variety of high quality shows to one place over a fixed period of time. As RUMPUS’ reputation grows as the home for independent theatre, the community will be emboldened, it will drive the creation of new work, and contribute to the long-term viability of second-tier production.

RUMPUS has the potential to truly reinvigorate a sector that has been sorely affected by ongoing cuts to arts funding. It is designed by artists to be as hospitable as possible to the creation of new, bold and diverse work.

Donations to this project will supplement other fundraising efforts in order to pay the artists programmed in the season and provide as many in kind benefits to them as possible – such as a free venue, marketing and production support.

The end result will be an exciting season of new work by South Australian artists. The 2019 season is a pilot program. Based on its successes and challenges RUMPUS will respond to the artistic community in its future direction and decision making processes. By refining and modifying its practice, seeking a secure venue, planning new seasons of work, and growing audiences for second tier performance, RUMPUS will become a staple in Adelaide’s independent sector.
