Poppy Seed was born out of one simple idea—to support artists in developing sustainable careers. To do this Poppy Seed created a boutique, curated festival of independent theatre.
In collaboration with an amazing artistic panel, Poppy Seed will select five works through a rigorous application process and program them into the 2017 Festival. Each successful project will receive $7500, a theatre for the run of their show, a publicist, mentoring from our artistic panel and the opportunity to partake in workshops specifically designed to help ensure longevity in our industry. Festival participants form a de-facto ensemble and work together to share resources and problem solve collaboratively.
Poppy Seed puts artists at the centre of its practice, with their needs primary in our collective thinking.
In our first two years of operation, this approach ensured festival goers were treated to the highest standard of theatre from outstanding emerging and mid-career talents. The Festival productions universally received excellent reviews and captured the imagination of Melbournians. Melbourne is rightly proud of its status as Australia’s arts capital with Poppy Seed committed to helping ensure the future of Melbourne’s theatre scene.
With such a high burn out rate among independent artists due to limited funding opportunities and support, Poppy Seed fills the gap left by other similar projects that have recently left the Melbourne landscape.
We are in our infancy but after only two years of operation the initiative has received overwhelming support from the artistic community, garnered support from some the industry’s biggest players and has directly supported over 180 artists.
Poppy Seed Festival is about support, exceptional art and ultimately Melbourne’s artistic future. We receive modest funding from the City of Melbourne and now need to achieve an equally modest philanthropic target to ensure our festival is sustainable and operational costs can be met.
