Ensemble 642 is Hannah Lane (baroque harp) and Nicholas Pollock (theorbo, lutes, baroque guitar), two of Australia’s most exciting young baroque musicians. ‘Plucked’ celebrates the unique sound of our rare plucked-string instruments, which were central to the music of the baroque era, in particular the seventeenth-century, our musical ‘home’!

We founded the ensemble in 2016 with the aim of sharing the spirit and emotion of this exquisite music with 21st-century audiences. This project constitutes our first professional recording as an ensemble and was conceived in response to the COVID-19 crisis as a way to continue sharing the music that inspires us. Rather than a traditional CD, it will be released over the next six months as individual tracks in video and audio formats for free digital download and streaming.

With the help of your generous donation, matched dollar for dollar by Creative Partnerships Australia’s ACF Boost program, we will be able to record rarely-heard music on an even rarer combination of instruments!

While nothing can replace the intimate experience of live performance, ‘Plucked’ aims to satisfy the senses during this time without live concerts. You will be transported to another time and place from the comfort of your living room!

The recordings will feature the ensemble both as a duo and in collaboration with guest artists, renowned Australian baroque musicians who have inspired us. We are engaging leading Australian music producer Haig Burnell to ensure that you experience the richness and subtlety of our instruments in all their glory. Haig has over thirty years of experience working as a music producer including for ABC Classic FM and has a special affinity for the sound of baroque instruments. Melbourne-based contemporary visual artist and videographer Kieran Seymour will create video to accompany the music so you can enjoy the visual beauty and intricate technique of our instruments.

Your support will assist us in covering the recording, video, and post-production costs, venue hire, and artist fees. It will enable us to grow as an ensemble and produce a significant and tangible creative output during this COVID-19 period, which will then be freely available for your enjoyment.

We are a young ensemble in our first five years of operation and while we have garnered increasing critical and industry acclaim for our performances, we have not had the means to produce any professional recordings. With ‘Plucked’, we are also looking beyond this crisis to a time when we will be able to present live concerts again. High quality recording and video is now absolutely essential for ensembles to generate future concert and presentation opportunities. Your support in creating this project will put us in a stronger position coming out of the COVID-19 crisis and make a vital contribution to the growth and sustainability of Australian early music.

Ensemble 642 is Hannah Lane (baroque harp) and Nicholas Pollock (theorbo, lutes, baroque guitar).

Formed in 2016, The ensemble is dedicated to exploring the art of basso continuo and creating exciting programs in collaboration with leading early music specialists to share the beauty of rare music from the baroque era with contemporary audiences.

Both musicians are leaders of the next generation of Antipodean musicians dedicated to early music and historical performance practice. Individually and as a continuo team they perform regularly with leading ensembles including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera, the Orchestra of the Antipodes, Australian Haydn Ensemble, Van Diemen’s Band, and Latitude 37.

The ensemble’s name refers to the historical numbering system used by continuo players in the baroque era to denote the harmonies to be played above the bass line.
