Picasso and His Dog is a new work for families inspired by the love between one of the world’s most famous artists and his canine muse. The show is an inventive mix of live art-making, puppetry and magic realism from an accomplished creative team led by director Sarah Kriegler. It will premiere in 2016.
One fine spring morning in 1957, Lump arrived. Lump was an elongated sausage dog
with floppy ears and an inquisitive nature. As he leapt out of the car, he looked around at Picasso’s villa and then into the deep, brown eyes of the man himself and decided he was home.
From this first meeting, a deep love was forged between Picasso and Lump. He was an inspiration for Picasso, appearing in 54 of the artist’s works. The show explores this relationship and the art it inspired as well as the wider exploration of the
animal muse in art.
This work is a unique children’s puppet play that combines the art and story of Picasso with the extraordinary poems of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and the text of Picasso’s contemporary, Gertrude Stein. It is a refreshingly original work, wild and adventurous.
Lemony S is seeking support for the final production period of PICASSO AND HIS DOG. In addition to grant income, your support will help us cover the costs of artist’s fees and production materials (such as set, costume and lighting).
PREMIERE SEASON 2016
The work will premiere in Melbourne in the first half of 2016. That seems like a long time away, but we need to fundraise this far in advance as we will begin pre-production the second half of 2015. Every donation we receive strengthens our project and enables us to plan wisely to achieve our beautiful vision for this show.
