PHOTO 2020 is a major new international festival of photography for Melbourne and Regional Victoria being delivered in collaboration with cultural institutions, museums, galleries and universities.
Taking place every two years, the festival will address the major issues of our time in a program of new artist commissions, exhibitions, talks, film screenings, masterclasses, education programs and awards. Presenting ideas critical to contemporary photographic discourse, PHOTO encourages the public to engage with and think about photography and visual culture in new and inspiring ways.
The inaugural festival, PHOTO 2020, runs from 23 April to 10 May 2020 and is being delivered in collaboration with over 25 cultural institutions, museums, galleries and universities. It is a time for the sector across the country to come together, and to foster international exchange.
PHOTO 2020 will explore the relationship between photography and truth. Photography is intrinsically and infinitely subjective, and the choices photographers make shape how we view the world. Today the relationship between what we see and what we believe is more complex than ever. PHOTO 2020 will investigate how photography is both implicit in, and critical of, shifting notions of truth.
With your support, we will launch an International Photography Festival which we hope will become the world’s leading photography festivals. We aim to bring together the sector, provide a platform for international exchange and assert Melbourne’s position as a global hub for culture, photography and visual art. We are committed to working with the very best artists from Australia and overseas, and supporting the commissioning of new work.
Your donation to PHOTO 2020 will support our work delivering a world class artistic program and a dynamic and robust series of events and education programs. Your donation will also allow us to start planning our artist development programs and commission new work for PHOTO 2022. We appreciate your leadership in supporting our longer term programming.
