In KAGE’s newest work, everyday language becomes both redundant and indefinable while the meaning remains unmistakable. Directed by Kate Denborough, Out of Earshot will feature a profoundly Deaf dancer as well as a renowned contemporary jazz musician and explore the power of non-verbal language, intense physicality and the role that sound plays within communication.
Your support will give KAGE the capacity to fully develop and rehearse the work in 2016, ahead of its Melbourne premiere in 2017. It will allow us to engage five artists for the creative development and to begin working with two incredible designers on the final concept for the show.
Out of Earshot aims to give hearing people an insight into Deaf culture and the Deaf experience. This work will showcase aural and visual effects, original choreography and be devised and performed by a diverse cast of celebrated performers. The cross-artfom performance will be created with KAGE’s signature style of vibrant storytelling and distinctive aesthetic, which has proved to resonate strongly with a broad audience.
In developing the concept of Out of Earshot, Kate identified not only a need to create more performance opportunities for Deaf dancers but that the final performance outcome must appeal to both hearing and Deaf audiences. Kate’s desire is for Out of Earshot to provide an opportunity for audiences to reflect on the role of communication in our lives and how much we take the spoken word for granted.
The first creative development was held in September 2015, with KAGE bringing together key members of the company ensemble – Timothy Ohl and Gerard Van Dyck, two emerging dance artists Elle Evangelista and Anna Seymour and Myele Manzanza, an internationally renowned drummer who combines his formal jazz training with traditional African rhythms.
Your support will give KAGE the vital opportunity to engage with new collaborators, challenge our artistic process and to create a work, which has significant positive social impact. We are seeking $25,000 in donations by 30 June 2016 to give us the opportunity to create Out of Earshot and continue to create works that are beautiful, inspiring and out of the ordinary.
