A mother’s lament, a poet’s surrender, a child’s rebellion and a narcissist’s appreciation of good lipstick…

Told from the intimacy of one family’s crisis and isolation, #No Exemptions, is a play that compacts time – hitting us with the the personal cost of environmental reckoning.

No amount of privilege can protect any of us from the consequences of over consumption and environmental vandalism.

This is art as protest.

Growing a new Australian play from development to performance is a challenge and a privilege.

We are thrilled to have teamed up with writer Angela Buckingham for this project. We’ve attracted an awesome team with director Susie Dee at the helm and actors Carolyn Bock, Helen Hopkins, Lee Mason, Chi Nyugen, Sahil Saluja on board. Sound designer Ian Moorhead is poised to design the sound bath…

Now we just need YOU!

Your help now will mean we can polish the script through workshops so that it is stage ready by the end of the year.

Supporting the Arts is crucial at this time when so much of our income and performance opportunity has either gone or been postponed due to COVID-19.

Your support will help us to fill some of the gaps and support our creative team. We might not be able to get back into the theatres just yet, but we can be proactive during this time and plan for future possibilities. This gives us hope, a sense of purpose and keeps our creativity flowing!

Funds raised on this platform will be used to support our creative team as part of a broader campaign through Arts Funding platforms. The development time we seek funding for will be a think tank- a dedicated time to explore and discover the characters, create a sonic world and imagine the aesthetic of this new work. Founded in 2009 by Carolyn Bock and Helen Hopkins, The Shift Theatre is focused on presenting dynamic works with strong roles for women, both from existing texts and in the development of new works.

‘Our aim is to provide a stimulating and collaborative platform for directors, actors and creatives who share our vision and passion for stories that capture the heart and imagination.’

The Shift Theatre’s inaugural season played at The Dog Theatre in Footscray producing two works: the Australian premiere of Nilo Cruz’ Two Sisters and a Piano and Fred, by acclaimed Australian playwright Beatrix Christian. With L.Wolf Productions, The Shift Theatre co-produced Lost In Ringwood by Barry Dickens.

With a passion for women‘s history and stories, Carolyn and Helen have researched, co written and produced two original Australian works: The Girls in Grey and Hallowed Ground- Women Doctors in war. Both of these productions were developed through La Mama Theatre’s Exploration seasons followed by respective performances at The Shrine of Remembrance and The Australian War Memorial. Published by Currency Press, The Girls in Grey premiered at Theatre Works in 2012, toured regional Victoria in 2013, N.S.W. and Victoria in 2014 and W.A. in 2015. Hallowed Ground premiered at La Mama’s Carlton Courthouse in 2018; in 2019 played at the Adelaide Fringe Festival followed by a regional Victorian Tour and a season at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival receiving a Summerhall Lustrum Award.
