New community theatre in Malvern East

We need your help converting an iconic fire station into a state-of-the-art arts facility. Support our local artists and performers by making this a reality! All donations are tax deductible.

Days Left

Melbourne is arguably the arts capital of Australia. While we have many large theatres, we desperately need smaller venues that are suitable for all performance types.

The Firehouse Theatre is a new arts hub currently in development in Malvern East – it contains a 170 seat black box theatre (12m x 9m stage) with sprung floor, lighting and sound, that can be converted into a 16m x 14m rehearsal space. The space can be used for auditions, exhibitions, performance (dance, cabaret, singing, and drama) rehearsals, and gallery space.

This project is an important development in the local arts community, providing a much-needed space for new and established artists, community groups, performance companies, local and national festivals (such as the Cabaret, Jazz and Comedy Festivals) and schools.

Firehouse Theatre is currently in development and, with your support, is expected to be completed by early 2020.

The Firehouse Theatre will provide the community with an affordable and accessible rehearsal, exhibition and performance space and will be one of Melbourne’s only community arts venues with a fully sprung floor for safe and professional performance.

We have already laid a lot of the initial ground work, having secured $200,000 from the State Government as well as $300,000 of our own funds. We are asking our local community to help get us over the line with the $750,000 required to complete this amazing arts facility.

In addition to initial support, we are also asking for ongoing donor support. This will allow the theatre to develop its own internal performance programs for children and adults in a range of styles, including dance, theatre and music theatre, providing great training and performance opportunities for people who may otherwise not be able to access.

Please get involved in this great story – all donations are tax deductible!

The $500,000 we have already contributed through own funds and State Government support, have enabled us to install sprung flooring throughout the facility, as well as dividing walls and toilets. The remaining funds required will go toward:

– Retractable seating bank for 150 people ($150,000)
– Acoustic separation of the theatre, including a new roof ($300,000)
– Lighting rig ($125,000)
– Sound equipment ($75,000)
– Theatrical drapes ($20,000)
– Entry foyer/box office ($80,000)

These costs are estimates at this stage, and any donations above our target will go toward our program development as outlined above.

It is an exciting time and we look forward to working with the community to provide a beautiful and functional arts space to sit alongside our other local cultural institutions. This facility will support our local artists, while giving our community some amazing and unique performances to view.
