Dan and Jamie have worked together before, most notably as two of the co-creators of The Stream / The Boat / The Shore / The Bridge for the 2012 Next Wave Festival, which won a Green Room Award for Outstanding Production – Creative Agency for Audiences. That project also toured to Launceston in 2013 and Brisbane in 2014, but since that time Jamie has created several solo works in Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Darwin and Dan has worked at Melbourne Fringe meaning we haven’t had any time to follow up on collaborative ideas. After many years, our notebooks are full of ideas and we’re keen to actively explore several ideas to see if they have legs.
Instead of following the funding, or creating things in response to external opportunities, we are delving into a weekly practice that grows over time to create viable projects. To do this we have agreed on a baseline of interests, goals and are developing a working methodology of spending time in interesting spaces, bringing us into contact with community members.
Our approach has already borne some fruit (which we’re keen to tell you about in a a sec) but there’s also lots also bubbling away beneath the surface that we aren’t able to tell you about JUST YET…
Our first win is a one-off participatory performance as part of an upcoming NGV program. While this opportunity does come with some funding, our ambition is to work with several further artists who also deserve a fee for their time and work. As always, the more time we are able to spend on the project, the better it will be.
The major bulk of funds will be spent on a small stipend for our time, travel and accommodation costs and production costs.
Process, process, process! Too often, performance making defaults to the goal of the end game – BUT we all know the crucial stage is in the development phase. Rich ideas anchored by a considered process, rigorous research and testing, and measured planning is what makes projects strong. And our combined experiences have taught us to value just that. And THAT is the journey we want you to come along with us!
You won’t just be funding ONE show, you will be supporting practice. You’re buying into our vision, and paving a way for us get better at what we do!
