The ELISION ensemble wishes to commission a major work, of at least twenty minutes length, for mixed instrumental forces from composer Richard Barrett in celebration and honour of Richard Toop, a profound thinker, friend to many and associate who played a decisive role in Australian cultural life through his contributions to the genre of new music.
This is a rare opportunity. ELISION is an internationally recognised leader in contemporary Australian performance practice and long associated with both composer Richard Barrett and musicologist and thinker Richard Toop. In the formative years of the ensemble as it took its very first international steps, Richard Toop wrote successive reviews of ELISION’s concerts and recordings in journals amplifying the reach and credibility of the ensemble. Equally, Toop played a significant role in underpinning the significance of Richard Barrett as a major compositional voice and leader in the development of aesthetic trends within new music.
The donation will be used to commission Richard Barrett to write a major ensemble work for ELISION which will then be performed in Australia and toured internationally. Given the historic relationship and close connection between composer Richard Barrett, ELISION and Richard Toop, the overall aura surrounding the inception and realisation of the work will attract multiple audiences, performance and attention within the field of practice.
