Rubiks is a Melbourne-based chamber ensemble with a passion for new music, storytelling and cross-art collaboration, bringing together some of Australia’s most exciting and versatile young performers.
Since debuting in 2015, we’ve been hailed as “a formidable contribution to Australia’s growing community of contemporary music makers” (Partial Durations) and commended for our “incredibly personal, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching” performances (Limelight Magazine).
In 2017, Rubiks has been invited to give our debut performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre. We’ve assembled an all-star team of guest musicians and will be teaming up with the award-winning Invenio Singers to present a portrait concert celebrating the 75th birthday of Meredith Monk on October 23. Meredith is a huge inspiration to our ensemble, and a true interdisciplinary artist – a singer who pioneered incredible new vocal techniques, a composer, a dancer, choreographer, a director and a filmmaker.
For this concert our core quartet will be expanding up to a sixteen-piece ensemble, making this our biggest and most ambitious project to date. With the support of Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH Lab program, we’re fundraising to cover the artist fees for this event and to launch a new female composer prize inspired by Meredith’s legacy.
The Pythia Prize is a new commission project that will see an Australian female composer collaborate with Rubiks to create a new work, to be premiered in 2018. Rubiks recognises the need to create more opportunities for women in contemporary music, and we’re excited to use our ensemble as a platform to highlight the work of women in the Australian musical community. The Pythia Prize winner’s piece will be performed both in Australia and in Europe, featuring in Rubiks’ first international appearances in July.
Donations raised through the Australian Cultural Fund will cover artist fees for 75 Years: A Portrait of Meredith Monk and the commission fee for the winner of the inaugural Pythia Prize. All funds will directly support new performance opportunities for the musicians involved, the creation of new work and the celebration of diversity and innovation in contemporary music.
Rubiks has been chosen to be part of Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH Lab program, which means that every donation made towards our projects will be matched dollar for dollar. This means your donations will go twice as far to support these new opportunities for Australian musicians, provided we reach our campaign target of $4,000! All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
