In each of the past two years the Melbourne Bach Choir has awarded scholarships to talented young singers to assist them in developing their talent and to gain performance experience by singing in concerts with the choir. The choir gains also from their enthusiasm and great skills. Will you support us to continue the scholarship program in 2018?

This scholarship project is an opportunity for talented young singers. The scholars are granted a stipend in return for singing in the four concerts performed by the main choir and the Chamber Choir. The choral scholars are also given the opportunity for solo performances in some concerts. They gain the experience of singing a challenging repertoire in the company of experienced singers under the conduction of the Choir’s highy regarded Music Director, Rick Prakhoff.

The presence of these eight core singers has brought an influx of younger members to the choir and made possible the formation of a chamber choir, which performs a more diverse range of repertoire. Their presence has not only benefited these young singers, but also raised the standard of the choir as a whole, providing a refinement that has also benefited Melbourne concert audiences.

We are seeking the support of the community so that we can continue this program in 2018.

Donations will be used to pay a stipend of $1500 to each of the eight scholars selected. The choir also provides a development opportunity in the scholarship selection itself – all applicants are invited to participate in a choral workshop, working with the Choir’s Music Director, Rick Prakhoff, accompanist Kathryn Pisani and leading singers from the Australian choral and operatic scene. They are then offered an individual audition and given detailed feedback. Donations also support the choral workshop and auditions.

The scholarship program offers young singers a well-rounded development opportunity and in doing so the Choir itself benefits from their enthusiasm, musical skills and fine voices.

Further information about the Choir and the youth scholarship program can be found on the Choir’s web site www.mbc.asn.au or Facebook page.

Melbourne Bach Choir is a choir drawing on singers of all ages throughout Melbourne’s extensive choral community, giving singers and audiences alike the opportunity to experience live choral music. The choir works to achieve fine choral performances and is committed to donating to community aid and charity organisations.

The Melbourne Bach Choir was formed in 2005 to give an Easter performance of J. S. Bach’s magnificent St. Matthew Passion in 2006. The choir has since expanded its repertoire to include a broad range of styles, and gives at least four major concerts each year; however Bach’s music remains at the core of its performance.

Over the past two years the Choir has given Good Friday performances of the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion to sell-out audiences in the Melbourne Recital Centre.

Developments over the past two years have been the creation of a chamber choir, a new scholarship program, and a tour to Europe giving five concerts in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.
