I have an opportunity to record a commercial album with Konstantin Shamray, First Prize Winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition. Konstantin will record Idle Hands, a set of five new piano pieces I will compose especially for him, in addition to a selection of my best piano pieces written since 2000.
This project is a career-defining opportunity for me, and is the culmination of 20 years of composing. I’m asking for donations towards the remaining $10,900 I need to create Idle Hands and produce the recording.
Idle Hands will reflect my preoccupation with simplicity and fragility in musical ideas, and my conviction that the most exhilarating moments can be found in them. Konstantin Shamray, ‘a pianist of sensitivity and refinement’ (Calgary Herald), gives me the best chance of their discovery.
The piano will be a Steinway D, and the venue Adelaide’s acoustically superior Elder Hall. Lachlan Bramble, whose recordings of my work have helped earn them nominations from AACTA and APRA, will engineer the recording.
The complete album, including Idle Hands, will be recorded in September 2020. In October it will be released digitally and as a limited edition of 500 CDs.
“A world of extreme fragility and introspection (…) reaches a state of perpetual emotional suspension (…) distilled (…) intriguing (…) gorgeously played by Benaud Trio”. So said The Australian in its five star review of Holy Fools, my previous ACF backed recording project. I’m banking on repeating that quality and success with Konstantin Shamray and Idle Hands.
