MAKE A TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION AND HELP US REACH OUR GOAL!

WHY INSPIRE A LOVE OF READING?

Like the rest of Tasmania, the Huon Valley has a functional literacy rate of just 50%.

That means that half our adults may need assistance to read the instructions on medication, to navigate a website or to fill out a Government form (to be fair, we can all struggle with that last one).

There are some wonderful organisations working to increase local literacy skills.

Learning to read when you’re a little older can be tough.

Once a person gets their hands on that first book they *have* to finish, though, reading becomes something they do for pleasure rather than a chore.

Our aim is to help more people in the Huon Valley find that first book to fall in love with.

We’re asking for your help to do it.

WHERE WILL MY MONEY GO?

Your tax deductible donation will help us deliver our extensive free community program.

We’re running the inaugural readers and writers festival in the Huon Valley later this year (31 October to 3 November). Alongside our panel sessions and workshops we’re offering a range of free events and book parties to encourage mums, dads, kids and people of all ages to get involved.

This includes:
– taking local children’s authors into local libraries and schools to share their books and make writing fun,
– running a children’s writing competition about female bushrangers, as well as a youth and an adult short story competition,
– a Halloween party that’s all about dressing up as your favourite character from a book, and
– the Hall of Writers, a day-long book fair showcasing many local children’s and adult authors alongside some of Australia’s best loved writers.

Our hope is that by participating in – or being surrounded by – this celebration of books and writing more people in the Huon Valley will be inspired to try reading for pleasure.

Your donation will help us make that happen.

PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR MATCH LAB GOAL – $1 = $2

We’re close to raising the funds we need to deliver this program.

We need to raise the last $1000 by 31 May 2019 to reach our goal.

Overall, our free community program will cost $20,000 to deliver.

We can earn half of this, $10,000, from MATCH Lab.

To do so, we have to raise $10,000 ourselves by 31 May. MATCH Lab will then match each dollar and double our funds.

This means every dollar donated will be matched and doubled!

So a $20 tax deductible donation from you would become $40 for delivering the free community program.

We’ve been working hard and have raised over $9000 already through a series of fundraising book events, literary salons, high teas and a couple of moonlight cemetery tours (so much fun!).

Please help us raise that last $1000!

You’ll have our eternal gratitude and we’ll thank you on our social media.

Thank you for your time!

Terror Australis Readers and Writers Festival (TAF) is a new biennial event in the Huon Valley.

Over four days ~ from 31 October to 3 November 2019 ~ Cygnet and surrounds will be alive (or undead) with panel sessions, parties, workshops and free community events.

The inaugural theme, Murder She Wrote, is an exploration of crime and mystery fiction written by women past and present.

In addition to celebrating darker words and worlds, the festival will encourage local reading, writing and literacy groups to connect with one anther, and open career pathways for young and emerging writers.
