Improvisation Course & Composer Workshop

Duoz travels to Italy to partake in the Helicona International School of Improvisation, and then journeys to the UK to workshop with composer Judith Weir and violin-cello duo High Heels and Horse Hair.

Days Left

From July 8 to 15 2019, Duoz is participating in the Helicona International School of Improvisation in Verona, Italy. Duoz will then spend the next week in the UK: Duoz is travelling to London to workshop with Master of the Queen’s Music Judith Weir her own compositions, and then Duoz travels to Glasgow to workshop with prominent violin-cello duo High Heels and Horse Hair.

Duoz is really excited about this project because it presents opportunities for learning that are not available in Australia. By participating in the Helicona Improvisation School, Duoz will learn the skills of (historically informed) improvisation and will then be able to incorporate these skills in their own performances. Workshopping Judith Weir’s own compositions with her enables Duoz to perform these works with veracity.

High Heels and Horse Hair is an established violin-cello duo with a strong history of commissioning and performing new works, and the opportunity to work with and gain mentorship from these performers will strengthen Duoz’s creative power. Duoz looks forward to the beginning of these international connections, and their possibilities for the future.

In donating towards this project, you are helping us (Duoz) bring new knowledge and skills to our performances and work as musicians in Australia. As audience members, you are the ultimate beneficiaries of this!

Our fundraising goal of $2000 is to cover the course fee for the Helicona International School of Improvisation. This is a big project and we have also applied for grant funding, but this is not confirmed at this stage. We will be pitching in a significant contribution ourselves. If we do happen to surpass our fundraising target, any additional funds raised will go towards expenses such as accommodation and travel.

When we return we will be performing a concert that actively draws upon the skills we will learn through this project. To find out more about Duoz and our upcoming concerts and projects, please follow us on Facebook: facebook.com/duozensemble

Live Projects

Duoz is Jason and Kirsten Tong, violin and cello, husband and wife. Based in Brisbane and established in 2018, Duoz explores the musical world for violin and cello, sharing this with audiences through concerts and collaborations.

Duoz is grounded in the classical music genre, and actively seeks to perform Australian music and new music: in their first two concerts Duoz performed repertoire standards (Handel-Halvorsen’s ‘Passacaglia’, Kodály’s ‘Duo Op. 7’), lesser-known works from the 20th century (Martinů’s ‘Duo No. 1’, Villa-Lobos’s ‘2 Chôros (bis)’), works by Australian composers (Betty Beath’s ‘Encounters’, Paul Stanhope’s ‘Songline’), and recently written music by composers of other nationalities (Lei Liang’s ‘Gobi Canticle’, Pēteris Vasks’s ‘Castillo Interior’).

2019 sees Duoz perform multiple concerts, including a collaboration with the chamber choir Fusion. In April 2019, at the request of the composer, Duoz made the first recording of Betty Beath’s ‘Encounters’. In July 2019, Duoz will travel internationally to attend professional development workshops in Italy and the United Kingdom, with these workshops directly influencing Duoz’s performances on their return to Australia.
