Described as “a creative powerhouse for Australian (and international) new music” (SMH, 2014) and “a beacon in Sydney’s musical culture” (Classikon, 2014), Halcyon is a major force in creating and promoting new chamber music for voice.

“These two CDs [Waves I and Waves II] … present composers and performers of distinction and the results are exemplary. May there be many more.”
(The Music Trust, 2015)

Kingfisher – Songs for Halcyon is a substantial project. It has expanded significantly the repertoire of contemporary Australian song, leaving an enduring gift for the future.”
(Sounds Like Sydney, 2015)

Since 1998, Halcyon has presented consistently lauded concerts, showcasing intimate and rarely heard repertoire. Wanting to reach a wider audience and create lasting performances that celebrate the best of both artist and composer, in 2006 Halcyon committed to producing studio recordings of key works. Since then, Halcyon has recorded and released studio versions of 30 new works that showcase new Australian vocal chamber music performances of the highest calibre. Recent reviews have highlighted both their quality and their ongoing cultural value.

In the coming year Halcyon will continue producing high quality studio recordings of recent Australian works and commissions. Projects such as these rely on the generosity and support of donors to reach fruition. Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we reach our campaign target of $10,000.

New compositions deserve to have a long life beyond their first performances and these recordings will enable them to be heard and shared with a much wider audience for years to come. Please lend us your support to bring these pieces to life.

Recordings planned for 2016 include Ross Edwards’ Five Senses (2013), Matthew Hindson’s Insect Songs (1998) and the Halcyon-commissioned A Feast of Lanterns II (2015) by Larry Sitsky.

Regarded as a leading exponent in the field of new music, for 20 years Halcyon has presented stunning performances of vocal chamber music from around the world, with a special emphasis on Australian composition.

Directed by mezzo soprano Jenny Duck-Chong, Halcyon has showcased many rarely heard international works and premiered new offerings from some of Australia’s most esteemed composers. Since 1998 these ‘new music champions’ have performed on grand and small stages, in grand houses, art galleries, recital halls, at music industry events and music festivals, collaborating with numerous outstanding artists and ensembles and forging connections across the globe with composers, music centres and institutions. 2018 is a chance to look forward and back at the large body of repertoire we have performed and commissioned.

Our performances will include re-appearances of works by Australian composers Ross Edwards, Rosalind Page, Brad Taylor-Newling and new presentations of works by Australians Larry Sitsky, Andrew Ford, Sadie Harrison, and Gillian Whitehead (NZ), Annaliese Van Parys (Belgium), Dai Fujikura (Japan/UK), Robert Lombardo (USA) and a substantial new song cycle, This Kind of Life, by long-time colleague Elliott Gyger in his 50th birthday year.

Beyond the concert stage, as mentors Halcyon has presented concerts and workshops focusing on vocal writing and contemporary Australian song repertoire to composition and vocal students and teachers at the secondary and tertiary level in NSW, Canberra and Victoria. They have since expanded this area of speciality in 2018 by working with emerging composers on a one-to-one mentoring basis and by creating a YouTube series of short composer interviews entitled In Conversation With…, a chance to hear in an informal way from a range of Australian composers about their work and works. Composers featured so far are Ross Edwards, Matthew Hindson, Elliott Gyger and Raffaele Marcellino and interviews with Andrew Schultz and Andrew Ford are currently in production.

Since 2006, Halcyon has also produced a large collection of studio recordings, showcasing Australian composers and commissions, to make this intimate music accessible to a wider audience. This year has already seen the release of two new composer-focused CDs, This Moment Must Be Sung: Chamber Songs of Andrew Schultz and From the Hungry Waiting Country: Halcyon perform Elliott Gyger. Over their 20 years, they have created, or been featured on, more than 15 CDs. They are also regularly heard on broadcasts around the country through national and local radio stations.
