Described as “a creative powerhouse for Australian (and international) new music” (SMH, 2014) and “a beacon in Sydney’s musical culture” (Classikon, 2014), Halcyon is a major force in creating and promoting new chamber music for voice.
“These two CDs [Waves I and Waves II] … present composers and performers of distinction and the results are exemplary. May there be many more.”
(The Music Trust, 2015)
“Kingfisher – Songs for Halcyon is a substantial project. It has expanded significantly the repertoire of contemporary Australian song, leaving an enduring gift for the future.”
(Sounds Like Sydney, 2015)
Since 1998, Halcyon has presented consistently lauded concerts, showcasing intimate and rarely heard repertoire. Wanting to reach a wider audience and create lasting performances that celebrate the best of both artist and composer, in 2006 Halcyon committed to producing studio recordings of key works. Since then, Halcyon has recorded and released studio versions of 30 new works that showcase new Australian vocal chamber music performances of the highest calibre. Recent reviews have highlighted both their quality and their ongoing cultural value.
In the coming year Halcyon will continue producing high quality studio recordings of recent Australian works and commissions. Projects such as these rely on the generosity and support of donors to reach fruition. Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we reach our campaign target of $10,000.
New compositions deserve to have a long life beyond their first performances and these recordings will enable them to be heard and shared with a much wider audience for years to come. Please lend us your support to bring these pieces to life.
Recordings planned for 2016 include Ross Edwards’ Five Senses (2013), Matthew Hindson’s Insect Songs (1998) and the Halcyon-commissioned A Feast of Lanterns II (2015) by Larry Sitsky.
