It was a time before COVID, and the usual events had happened for running a theatre show. Scripts were arranged, auditions were held. An outstanding cast was selected. Crew EOI’s were applied for, rehearsals had begun and the set from the previous show was dismantled in readiness for the new one. A show with an epic sense of fun for our not for profit theatre group. Grease was the word….and the show must go on!!!
May was to see the opening of Grease the Musical staged at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. We were hoping to be able to bring our wonderful performance to the Wollongong stage so its dedicated and supportive audiences could experience some extra joy in their busy lives. But most importantly, give an exceptional educational experience to those aspirational cast and crew who are building their skills in order to work full-time in the future in the industry.
Of course there is always so much more in putting on a stage show that rarely gets seen by the average audience or community member. There are the work placement students that get to learn alongside industry mentors who pass down their knowledge. There are the set design, building and scenic artistry skills that are applied and taught from one enthusiast to the next. There are the workers from local crew and venue staff, from hospitality to venue crew, who get to share their craft.
We need to continue to provide an outlet, a creative space and a ‘family’ for these creatives to keep applying their skills and bringing the highest quality shows to our local area. Funds raised will make it possible for us to keep going until we come to a time when live performances can once again fill our performing spaces and our hearts.
Your kind donations allow us to cover costs for our headquarters, where we store all of our costumes, props and set pieces with creative new stage elements that will feature in our upcoming production of Grease.
And then hopefully, you can come and enjoy the show as much as we will enjoy staging it for you and we can share a moment of creative expression together.
