Genius is a new Australian musical, that tells the untold story of Albert Einstein and Mileva Maric; chronicling the early years of their struggle to be recognised as budding physicists attempting to overthrow the physics establishment, their rivalry and their scandalous romance. It is a unique and timely piece for today’s audience as it demands us to remain curious and re-examine history; impelling us to listen to the voices unheard and lost in the overgrowth of time. More than ever we need to recognise and encourage diversity and look back at those who may have not been recognised due to prejudice.
Utilising contemporary popular musicals such as Be More Chill and Dear Evan Hansen as a precedent, we will present Genius as a visual concept album; releasing 10 highlight songs from the show with notable Australian musical theatre performers, which will be streamed for free online as animated videos which will bring the story to life. The songs will also be available for streaming on Spotify and other music platforms.
It is our objective to source a cast of lead and ensemble singers who are well known and have a following in Australia, in order to increase interest and establish an identity for the project. It is of utmost importance to the production team that the cast is diverse and inclusive of all voices; especially people of colour, indigenous, non-gender conforming and trans. Given the subject matter of the piece, which encourages us to hear all voices, especially those who have been historically oppressed, it is essential that this factors into the project’s execution.
All the costs associated with this production are going directly toward compensating the immensely talented professionals for their work.
Ultimately, we hope to create a vibrant, unique and fresh theatrical experience. It is crucial that theatre artists find new ways during the next year to broadcast new work and reinvigorate our industry. Our objective is to create a piece, which pioneers a new way to present a musical and builds an audience and following that will allow for a future production.
Jess is thrilled to be collaborating with DHB Theatrical, and notable music director, Isaac Hayward, to bring this piece to Australian and New York audiences.
We believe that presenting highlights from the show in this fashion will get audiences excited about the story, the show, whilst galvanising support for a future production. I passionately believe in the future of this project as the theatre industry rebuilds, and I hope that you can come on this exciting journey with us.
