Brisbane-based violinist Flora Wong celebrates ten years of making music with her bespoke instrument with “Geburtstag”, a project that sees the creation of four new Australian works for violin that will expand the vocabulary of contemporary violin performance practice.
Handcrafted by master violinmaker Helge Grawert in 2009, Flora’s instrument has been her constant companion through countless practice sessions, rehearsals and performances, travelling with her to stages as varied as the Sydney Opera House, Brisbane’s iconic Tivoli theatre, and the piazza of a tiny hilltop town in Perugia, Italy.
“Geburtstag” celebrates this unique instrument’s tenth birthday by building on the rich history of violin music and exploring the possibilities of contemporary violin performance, both as a solo acoustic instrument and in combination with modern technology. Over four months, Flora will work collaboratively with four Australian composers to create the following works:
The four works will be composed and workshopped from July to September, and brought to Brisbane audiences in an intimate concert setting in October, with the possibility of future performances nationally and internationally.
“Geburtstag” not only adds to the existing repertory of Australian music for violin; it enriches our cultural landscape by promoting creative collaboration between artists who represent diverse and innovative voices in the arts. The project will be documented in words and images to allow audiences and other creative practitioners insight into the collaborative process.
Funds donated to this campaign will go directly towards the four composers’ commission fees. $2000 is the initial target – in combination with Flora’s own contribution, this is the minimum amount required to make the project happen. If the target is exceeded, any additional funds raised will be split evenly between the composers in recognition of the significance of their artistic contribution to the project and to Australian music.
Flora thanks three local Australian music businesses for their generous support of this project, ensuring that she works with tools of the highest quality: Ilja Grawert – Violinmaker, Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin and Simply For Strings.
