Three of Australia’s most respected composer performers: Catherine Milliken, 2018-2021 Composer in Residence, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra; Professor Vanessa Tomlinson, Head of Percussion, Griffith University (QLD); and Erik Griswold, composer; will mentor the emerging composers alongside musicians of Soundstream Collective. Selection takes place through a national call out, attracting the current generation of Australia’s most talented and dedicated emerging composers.

The emerging composers’ new works are subsequently premiered in a public concert at the University of Adelaide which is recorded and broadcast nationally by ABC Classic FM. 3 of the 5 mentees are awarded $3000 commissions each to write a second work for Soundstream in 2020.

The 2019 event, carried over from 2018 will run September 19-22. In 2019, the ECF reflects current contemporary compositional practice in Australia by focusing on site-specific music-making inspired by the unique surroundings of Aldinga Beach Conservation Park.

For the first time, two places are reserved exclusively for SA composers to address the under-representation of SA composers, and SA female composers.

Funds will be used to underpin the running of the Forum and the awarded commission.

Soundstream Collective is the University of Adelaide’s New Music Ensemble in Residence, a performance ensemble specialising in new music. We’re committed to shaping Australian culture through new music, embracing its performance, practice and reception at all levels of engagement.

We have commissioned over 30 works from Australian and international composers.

since our inception in 2011 our repertoire is wide ranging, from large scale, community events to the staging of avant-garde programs in intimate venues. A large focus of our activities is the expansion of a more diverse audience for new music; this not only keeps us ‘in business’, enhancing our performing and professional development opportunities, but sustains the legacy of new music for future generations.

We perform in various satellite events:
– An annual concert series
– Touring
– The biennial Emerging Composers Forum
– Workshops and residences by visiting luminaries for students and composers
– Public Open rehearsals and Forums
– New Waves Listening Club – audience discussions with composers and music practitioners over wine and cheese in an intimate, informal setting
