Elizabeth House for Dingo Blue

Buying a 100 year old, 8 bedroom house in Cooktown as an Art and Cultural Centre called Elizabeth House. We will have space for visiting artists in residence and workshops for art and music projects.

Days Left

Dingo Blue are a registered not-for-profit charity based in Cooktown on Cape York Peninsula. Our stated purpose is “to provide assistance to the young and elderly and those in need in our community through art, music, education and by providing basic needs.”
Currently we are purchasing a 100 year old, 8 bedroom house so that it can become an Art and Cultural Centre in Cooktown. The house is named Elizabeth House after Elizabeth Couper who drowned in a boating mishap in the 1800s in the ocean off Cooktown.

Elizabeth House will provide for activities which will be free or by donation, mainly staffed by volunteers. The house comes with 2 vacant blocks of land, one on each side of the house. This allows us to have room for a community garden and fruit orchard on one block and a playground/park on the other. We plan to provide a breakfast/snack programme for hungry community members, especially children on their way to or from school.

There is enough space in the house to have a music room, craft room, reading room and somewhere homework can be completed with assistance if required. The large closed-in verandah will be made available for groups to use via a donation system. We imagine choirs, performance groups and others being keen to use this space.

There are plans to later build an outdoor, roofed theatre beyond the garden for movies and plays. This outside area could also be used for table tennis and badminton.

In the backyard is a large shed and granny flat. The shed will become a workshop space and the granny flat will be refurbished as accommodation for visiting artists in residence. Elizabeth house will be a cultural hub and meeting place, something all communities need.

All donations will be used towards the purchase of Elizabeth House.

We can hardly wait to have the house purchased, renovated and up and running. We sincerely thank anyone who is able to support this project and would encourage you to come and be a volunteer in the future. One of the bedrooms will remain as a bedroom for visiting volunteers. Please help to make our vision a reality.
