Elizabeth Connell Prize

The ECP is an international singing competition for the aspiring dramatic sopranos of the world. Created for Australia from a legacy left by Elizabeth Connell, we need your help for 2017.

Days Left

Established in 2014, the ECP supports the achievement of excellence in the operatic world. Held annually, five sopranos are chosen from around the world and brought to Australia to compete in a Final at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for cash scholarships.

The competition is the only International singing competition in Australia. To date it has financially supported fifteen singers, with many now enjoying international operatic careers due in part to this legacy.

“Ms. Connell’s passion to support young dramatic sopranos with her extreme generosity is unmatched. This competition gives young dramatic sopranos world-wide exposure, and serves as an incredible platform for career development.” Julie Adams 2015 Winner

The ECP is about changing lives. Ms Connell’s life was changed forever when she made her Australian debut at the opening of the Sydney Opera House in War & Peace in 1973. Australia made that happen for her.

She then went on to thrill audiences on the stages of the world, including our own, for the next 30 years until her untimely death.

This is her gift to Australia for giving her that start as a young singer. Her legacy also increases Australia’s cultural landscape and presence on the international stage. The aim is to try to make a difference to young singers’ lives. With this in mind, the trustees and administrators hope to ensure her legacy lasts for generations to come so that many more lives can be uplifted and cast onto the international stages of the world.

What we want to do is increase our support of these singers.
We want to increase our prize pool of scholarships on offer.
We want to live stream our Finals Concert around the world.
We want this competition, which is held in conjuction with the Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Award, to be the most important competition in the Southern Hemisphere. But most of all, we want to change lives.

Your tax deductible donation of $2 or more through the ACF can go toward any one of these goals.

For more information see our website at www.jsrbfoundation.com or check out some of our winners on YouTube at the Elizabeth Connell Prize page.

The Elizabeth Connell Prize was created in 2014 from a legacy left by the late South African soprano Elizabeth Connell. It was her wish to create an international singing competition for the aspiring dramatic sopranos of the world and for it to be administered by the Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Foundation.

Auditions are held each year throughout the world. The top five singers then compete in Sydney for cash scholarship prizes to help assist with their studies and career.

To date the competition has financially assisted 15 young sopranos most of which are now enjoying international careers on the operatic stage in places like The Metropolitan Opera New York, San Francisco Opera, Opera Australia, Bayerische Opera Munich, Glyndebourne Opera UK, Moscow Opera, and in places like Jerusalem, Nurnberg, Seoul, Grange Park Opera UK, Nancy France, Poland and more.
