DRAINRATS is a sci-fi short film about three girls who live in a parallel universe, connected to our ruined world by a drainpipe. After a mute fugitive named “Zero” stumbles across the group, possessions mysteriously begin to go missing and their reality starts to deteriorate.

At the heart of this VCA graduate project are its queer themes and complex exploration of female sexuality in a group dynamic. Through the lens of sci-fi, the film creates a synergy between femininity and nature through layers of experiential textures. The characters are inspired by the raw and visceral nature of girlhood, an energy complemented by the film’s inner-city bush-scapes.

Gracie Dephoff is a 21 year old writer/director. She strives for a filmmaking career dedicated to representing the experience of being a queer female from a place of authenticity. She believes in the importance of pushing queer stories to the forefront of Australian film culture through financing work by LGBTQIA+ identifying creators. Committing to an all female/gender non-conforming cast and crew, the project’s representation on screen is aligned with the team behind the camera. Collaborating with many local artists, DRAINRATS supports the local Naarm (Melbourne) arts community.

Your donations to our project will go towards the cost of production as well as festival entry. The main expenses will be location, transport, catering, production design and special effects. The end result will be a short film that will strive for success in the Australian and international film festival circuit. The project will commence shooting in January 2021 and will be a COVID safe production.

Thank you all for your donations, your generosity is helping keep art alive in these challenging times.

*A reminder that donations over $2 are tax deductible*

Gracie Dephoff is in her final year of studying filmmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Growing up in Australia and New Zealand, Gracie has always carried a camera with her wherever she goes and loves capturing moments around her. She moved to Melbourne to pursue directing at the VCA but has also found a love for cinematography.

Gracie is interested in telling stories about female sexuality. Being a queer woman, she strives for a filmmaking career dedicated to representing the experience of being a queer female from a place of authenticity. She strongly believes in aligning yourself as a maker with the stories you’re representing on screen.
