DRAINRATS is a sci-fi short film about three girls who live in a parallel universe, connected to our ruined world by a drainpipe. After a mute fugitive named “Zero” stumbles across the group, possessions mysteriously begin to go missing and their reality starts to deteriorate.
At the heart of this VCA graduate project are its queer themes and complex exploration of female sexuality in a group dynamic. Through the lens of sci-fi, the film creates a synergy between femininity and nature through layers of experiential textures. The characters are inspired by the raw and visceral nature of girlhood, an energy complemented by the film’s inner-city bush-scapes.
Gracie Dephoff is a 21 year old writer/director. She strives for a filmmaking career dedicated to representing the experience of being a queer female from a place of authenticity. She believes in the importance of pushing queer stories to the forefront of Australian film culture through financing work by LGBTQIA+ identifying creators. Committing to an all female/gender non-conforming cast and crew, the project’s representation on screen is aligned with the team behind the camera. Collaborating with many local artists, DRAINRATS supports the local Naarm (Melbourne) arts community.
