I, Anthony Barton, am a student at the Victorian College of the Arts undertaking my masters degree in Film and Television Narrative Direction. This is my second semester film and something that I am deeply passionate about.
Not many people actually know that the indomitable Caesar was actually defeated – in Gaul (now France) in 52 BC. A defeat he mulled over for eight years. Of course, he then returned with a greater force to conquer his foe. The defiant Vercingetorix did the one and only thing left to do in the face of this onslaught.
He made a sacrifice.
A human sacrifice.
I am Christian. I’ve transitioned through Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox traditions – now Coptic Orthodox. I’ve been raised to consider that Christ Sacrifice – “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13) – is paramount and central to existence.
In researching this film I have discovered the evidence for Altruistic Human Sacrifice in Celtic Druidism.
I found this confronting. That the religious sacrifice of the one willingly could obtain something collectively from God for the tribe. That it could be chosen; I now see that myth in everything from Saving Private Ryan to Lord of the Rings.
I believe we must tell the story of this hugely significant moment in history, and to deal with it in a historically accurate way. We must explore What in Celtic Druidism paved the way for the post Celtic nations to receive Christianity?
To make my film I’ll need $5000+ AUD. This covers crew costs, transport, lens/ camera equipment rental, catering, horse wrangling, safety inspector on site, location costs, the rights to the music, purchase of props and paying the lead actors.
I am inspired to create something with reference to Valhalla Rising, Vikings and Gladiator.
Please be a part of my vision. I’m open to ways of honouring investment if you want to pitch something.
This film is a proof of concept for a Vikings style series, and any extra financing will go into development and planning for that.
I’m happy to discuss production with anyone who wants to help and thinks they can from academics to film enthusiasts.
I believe an unquestioned faith is untenable and I’m using this film to ask myself and others hard questions. Do you want to explore an answer with me?
