Set in Sydney, this magical-realism drama, tells the story of April – an endearing 30yo woman, struggling to break out of society’s cookie-cutter mould for success and happiness. Deep Pockets, Empty Hearts is a journey into self-discovery and self-acceptance. A film dedicated to anyone who feels disconnected from modern society and from themselves. It’s about finding new perspectives of life and appreciating what is really important to us as human beings: the freedom to be ourselves.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
With an urgent need to process all the pain and disconnection I felt around me, I buckled down and wrote this story. I have travelled to many places and have re-started my life from scratch many times. I have never loved anything more than the spark of a new adventure. But without warning, I would always find that these new, magical places would always lose their enchantment and I would find myself crushed by their imperfect reality.
It turned out, that the only thing ruining the illusion was me – specifically, how I compared my lifestyle to others.
We live in a world that has a specific formula for success and happiness: get married and get a job. We follow this recipe and never consciously ask ourselves if this is what we really want.
But what if, like April, more people found the courage to shamelessly express their true selves and marched to the beat of their own drums? This, with the help of your donations, is what I want audiences to realise: that it’s okay to be yourself and choose your own path.
