Canberra Wind Symphony is a collaboration of up to 40 fine instrumentalists who perform the latest new compositions for this emerging classical genre. We are one of only a few ensembles of this nature in Australia, as we play one-per-part, making us essentially a large chamber group. The genre is only a few decades old, and as a result, most of our composers are still living and benefiting from the live performance of their music. This also means that almost all our repertoire is still in copyright (not freely available to download), and there are no public music libraries available for us to use.
The 2018 Colour Concerts season sees CWS at a new venue (The Q) as well as returning to The Street and St. Andrew’s.
The Colour Concert Series starts on May 31st and continues through to November 10th, 2018.
This project is important because CWS is one of the only ensembles performing this genre of music at this level. The genre of the Wind Ensemble is a new emergence in classical music. It is not ‘orchestral’, it is not ‘band’, it is literally a large chamber group playing contemporary classical art music. Further, it is music that audiences love and enjoy – it is not only for the sake of art, but for the sake of beauty too.
CWS is proud to play the new music of living composers. By performing this music, we are providing a live canvas for the art form. Without performance, music doesn’t really exist. We are supporting composers so that they keep writing wonderful new music.
CWS is currently completely un-funded. Ticket sales do not cover the expense of music purchase. This funding opportunity will ensure exciting new compositions will continue to be enjoyed in the Capital Region.
When you hear the Canberra Wind Symphony, you’re experiencing up to 40 fine musicians who have donated their professional rehearsing and practicing time to performing several thousand dollars’ worth of new music. Your donation will assist us to sustain the performance of the music of living composers, and bring the lustrous colours of the wind ensemble to new audiences.
Help us reach our target and bring exciting new music to life.
