Book of Bontos – poetry ‘de Bono’ style!

Dr Edward de Bono, father of Lateral Thinking and countless other innovations, designed his own poem format called the ‘bonto’. I aim to travel to Malta to write/publish bontos with the master himself!

“I set up this page to get some backing
For the bonto format needed unpacking
The funds were raised, all 17 grand
For poetic progress, proper people stand!

The bonto poem is a very elegantly structured poetic format that has not been as widely recognised as Dr. de Bono’s other more famous creations (e.g. lateral thinking, 6 Thinking Hats)

The bonto is a four line poem, comprised of rhyming couplets and following a line-by-line story structure:
The first line describes an action
The second line gives a reason for the action
The third line delivers an outcome of the action
The fourth line is a philosophical reflection/moral to the story

See the example in bold above, and I read you 2 more in my pitch video!

As a poet I love being challenged by structure, be it syllable count each line or any other challenge. I love acrostic poetry, haiku/tanka, sonnets and writing rap lyrics which are very heavily rhyme structured. I love the bonto poem format and want to write a ‘book of bonto’ to commemorate the style and its creator, with the man himself. This is a format that people and poets should be more aware of so that they can explore it for themselves. The scope to tell a story in four rhyming lines with a powerful take-away message is very enticing.

I was lucky enough to meet Dr Edward de Bono when he was King of Launceston 15 years ago and we have stayed good friends since, often writing bontos together when we have the chance to spend time together. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this earlier, but here we are.

I’ll use this money to physically cover the cost of flying to Malta and undertake this residency, Dr. de Bono is offering his time in-kind to me. That is huge – big corporations pay tens of thousands of dollars per hour to have an audience with this powerhouse of thinking, and I just have to get myself there and do the work!

Edward has no plans to return to Australia, and his health may not even allow it. I really need to get to Malta to make this happen. This is more than just a book of poetry, this is the opportunity to record some of Edward de Bono’s lasting thoughts for humanity – in bonto poetry!

Thank you for reading/watching, and especially thank you for donating!!
