Inspired by black-box theatre, BK Opera aims to strip back opera to its emotional core, providing a minimalist take on the extravagance usually associated with the artform. Their 2017 season continues their unique approach with dark and intimate versions of well-known operas.
WERTHER // In a traumatised world fixated on ideas of class and keeping up appearances, Werther and Charlotte struggle with the effects of depression, obsession and love. Werther will be performed in the original French with English surtitles.
LA TRAVIATA // Caught in the fight between duty and passion, Violette’s story is one of strength and love. La Traviata will be performed in Italian with English surtitles
LA VOIX HUMAINE // A little known modern opera, Poulenc’s melodies echo the patterns of human speech. La Voix Humaine will be performed in French with English surtitles.
All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible through ACF and will contribute to the costs of opera production for our 2017 season. These costs include costuming, rehearsal costs and paying our talented pianists and creative team. Your donation also helps to keep our ticket prices low, to help make opera accessible to everyone.
Our cast and bare bones orchestra will be under the baton of James Penn, one of Australia’s most exciting young conductors. James is passionate about the inherent confrontation at the heart of all great opera. Having toured internationally, singing in the great European cathedrals and concert halls, he brings this experience to his work, focusing on bringing a European refinement to the Australian opera scene.
The 2017 season will be directed by acclaimed director, Kate Millett. Kate is a multifaceted artist working as a theatre and opera director, arts producer, writer, dramaturg and performer. Inspired by the opera scenes developing in New York and Berlin, Kate is bringing her black-box theatre mentality to opera, focusing on the emotionality of the singers, and bringing a visceral reality to this artform.
