Bega Valley Youth Orchestra

Support the Bega Valley Youth Orchestra 2021

The Bega Valley Youth Orchestra is a brand new orchestra founded in 2020. It has been a successful year. We now wish to grow and be able to offer instruments and scholarships to students in need.

Days Left

The Bega Valley Youth Orchestra was founded in February 2020. It currently consists of two string ensembles: a beginner ensemble and an advanced ensemble (highschoolers). We meet weekly and are working towards a Youth Festival performance in November.

We are looking to expand the orchestra by attracting more kids to string instruments as well as holding extra masterclass days.

We need funding to offer scholarships for families in need and to provide smaller instruments to kids just starting out. Kids go through 3 different sized instruments before they can purchase a full-size, and even 1/4 size instruments can cost over $1,000.

Having access to quality teachers, instruments and high level ensembles is incredibly important for kids, especially in regional areas. Having this orchestra in the Bega Valley means that local families are no longer having to consider sending their kids to Canberra or Sydney for lessons (3 or 6 hour drives!).

A youth orchestra gives young kids and teenagers alike a cohort of like-minded peers and mentors to look up to. It is a safe environment for kids to grow and learn.

Many regional families cannot afford the cost of lessons, instruments or extra-curricular activities. We offer scholarships to kids who would not otherwise be able to attend, instruments for families to borrow, and scholarships to families who have trouble affording lessons.

We are looking for donations to:

  • cover the rental cost of our rehearsal venue ($220 per term or $880 per year)
  • purchase instruments for students to borrow ($1600 currently needed to purchase hard cases for cellos)
  • offer scholarships for families who can’t afford orchestra fees ($480 per year per child)
  • offer an annual scholarship for private lessons ($1600 annually for a primary aged student or $3200 annually for an advanced student)

Live Projects

The Bega Valley Youth Orchestra was founded in February 2020 by three colleagues determined to give the kids of the Bega Valley a quality music education and the opportunity to make music at a high level.

Anna Martin-Scrase, cellist in Acacia Quartet, has over 20 years experience teaching cello and string ensembles. Her students have been accepted into the Arts Unit, Sydney Youth Orchestras, the Sydney Conservatorium and ARCO youth programs. She has recently moved from Sydney to the Far South Coast.

Vanessa Vromans, violinist, has over 20 years of experience which includes teaching at the young talent programme of the Rotterdam conservatorium, tutoring in school programmes for underprivileged children, organising and teaching at the “vioolweek” summer camp for strings in the Netherlands and private tuition of all ages. Vanessa has performed and taught at festivals internationally.

Geoffrey Badger is a permanent fixture of the music scene around Bega. He became interested in music pedagogy while working in the Kodaly-based Music Education Program at the Canberra School of Music. He is the director and founder of the Heartsong sacred music choir, the Friday Choir, Bega Valley Youth Choir, and Bega Valley Youth Orchestra.

BVYO currently consists of a primary school and high school string ensemble.
