Annette Carmichael Projects brings professional artists and community together to create extraordinary performances and exhibitions. Our large-scale dance performances are transformative arts experiences for participants and audience alike.
Because of You… celebrates the intimate bond between parent and child. Filled with love and joy, this dance project was first produced by Sandi Woo with families in Broome in 2013. A new version will be created in Denmark, Western Australia for National Families Week in May 2020.
The project will:
• Engage children (aged 3 – 6 years) and their parents/grandparents/carers in the creation of a performance.
• Deliver a range of workshops in play-based dance activity to the Denmark community.
• Offer audiences a unique and highly imaginative performance that places young children at the centre of the creative activity.
• Deliver a significant season of performances to celebrate National Families’ Week in May 2020.
Denmark is a small community in remote Western Australia with a transient population. Poor employment prospects mean that young families are particularly under pressure to relocate. This project will contribute to the retention of younger families by strengthening social networks and enhancing the sense of community belonging.
The love between a child and their parent or grandparent is one of the most fundamental of human relationships. Yet how we choose to raise our children can cause divisions within communities.
Sandi uses childhood games to get kids playing with their parents, grandparents or carers: building dance around their movement; and fostering friendship between families at the same time. At its heart, Because of You… celebrates the diversity of parent and child bonds and focuses people on the essence of this nurturing relationship.
Sandi will be travelling from Brisbane to create Because of You… with Denmark families this May – but we need your help to get her here! We have performances scheduled for National Families Week and must raise the remaining funds needed to get this project over the line.
Funds will be used for air travel, equipment hire and artist fees to make it possible for local families to participate. We will also be working with Denmark Community Resource Centre, Shire of Denmark, local child care centres and primary schools to facilitate the attendance by families from across the community.
