In a bold move to showcase Australian music in a rich and diverse vocal tapestry, all 19 composers have been given the challenge of creating a work using only sounds and no words.
These 19 compositions will be interleaved with fragments of art music from the last 12 centuries, and together form a dialogue – Nineteen to the Dozen – about the nature of vocal music and musical expression.
Bernie Van Tiel is not only a beatboxer, she’s a singer, songwriter, guitar player, rapper, and actor. In her live and studio work she uses elements of acoustic instruments, digital production and 100% vocals to achieve unique, contemporary pieces across a number of genres. Her own unique soundscape will be a beautiful complement to the eighteen other composers who are being commissioned as part of this tapestry including Lyle Chan, Sally Whitwell, and Matthew Hindson.
THE CRUX OF THE MATTER
This project needs your support! Australian composers deserve to be paid for their originality, craft, and the sheer magic they weave with their sounds. To fund the entire Nineteen to the Dozen project, The Song Company is deploying a variety of strategies to raise the substantial amount of money needed to pay the 19 composers for their creative contributions.
In this crowdfunding appeal, we are specifically raising $2000 to support our commissioning of Bernie Van Tiel’s composition using the sheer power of the human voice – eight voices, in fact! Why not consider a $19 donation to go with our 2019 season and the Nineteen to the Dozen concert tour title!
WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE
Your individual contribution towards the $2000, however large or small, is the part you play in creating something magical. We’re already looking forward to our first live performance on Tuesday 22 October 2019.
Nineteen to the Dozen will be heard in at least nine locations across Australia including Sydney Opera House, St George’s Cathedral in Perth, and the Melbourne Recital Centre.
