Art House is a brand-new concept – a social mission focused on strengthening the local economy and arts sector through job and opportunity creation, providing a place for artists to live, sleep and work while they are visiting our city and a way of increasing income and support to local creative industries.

We’re taking over a run-down hotel in the Adelaide CBD and turning it into a purpose-built artist hub with accommodation, rehearsal and gallery spaces and a café, bar and lounge for creatives.

Adelaide has a thriving grassroots art scene – independent creatives should be collaborating within a support network that leads to viable business while having the infrastructure to invite regional, national and international artists and creatives to visit, live, work, collaborate and play in our city.

Drawing on experiences of similar cultural hubs in places like Berlin, Stockholm, New York and London, Art House is cementing Adelaide, Australia, firmly within the canon of destination arts experiences.

Every foyer, hallway and room in Art House is a rolling exhibition space, with local and national artists and designers presenting their work to visitors and guests of the House. Each room and corridor is curated as space that inspires creativity.

Our live-in artist residency program is an Australian first – a place where creatives have the time and space to make work in the very building in which they live. Our artist residency will attract regional, national and international artists to Adelaide to work and create, perform and experience all that the city has to offer.

We have a three-tiered accommodation model – dorms, spartan and premiere rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms – providing a specific place for artists and arts workers to stay while they are touring, making or working in Adelaide (no more sleeping on couches while presenting Fringe shows!)

And of course, all profits from the hotel are used to support creatives and their work.

Art House is proud to announce we have partnered with Creative Partnerships Australia for this fundraising campaign. Every dollar donated by you will be matched dollar for dollar through MATCH Lab. You give 10 dollars – it becomes 20. Give 100; it becomes 200. Give 1000… well, you get the idea. You’re supporting a new model for arts entrepreneurship and creative social enterprise plus, as with all Australian Cultural Fund programs, every donation is tax deductible.

Less money for the tax man, more money for art. Simple.

The funds raised are going into the modelling, structuring, refurbishment and fit out of the current Art House site and the artist residency program. It’s a huge task, but we have a dedicated team of legal, business, strategy consultants and of course, creative entrepreneurs who are leading the project.

Sign up at arthouseadl.com to be in the know and register interest for artist residencies and opportunities in 2019 and beyond.

Thank you for supporting Art House.

Lewis Major is an award-winning choreographer and creative entrepreneur originally from the deep south of regional South Australia. After growing up on a farm shearing sheep and driving tractors, he finds it somewhat ironic to now be working in the most maligned and misunderstood sector of the arts industry: Contemporary Dance. He is the only dance artist he’s ever heard of who can shear a sheep and has travelled to all three axis-of-evil countries.

As a performer and dance maker, he has worked with and alongside Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant, Shaun Parker, Hans van Den Broeck/Cie Soit and was a founding member of Aakash Odedra Company. With an extensive back catalogue of award-winning choreographies, he has created and staged his own work on six continents. Lewis is passionate about creating high-quality arts experiences and delivering them to the widest possible range of audiences.
