LET’S START AT THE VERY BEGINNING
Established this past April, Antipodes Theatre Company (ATC) is already in the midst of an ambitious launch. The centerpiece of our 2019 Season is the Australian premiere of Dave Malloy’s new musical GHOST QUARTET, happening 14-23 August at Gasworks Arts Park in Melbourne. We’re also partnering with Alex Theatre–St Kilda to present the Ricochet Free Reading Series, a bi-monthly showcase of new plays. (Next up: EVERYBODY by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.) Some of these plays will be chosen from submissions, furthering our initiative to support and develop work by local writers. In July, we’ll host director and actress Susan M. Felder from the U.S. as she leads a collection of workshops for actors, and in October introduce our first “Broadway Bound!” program for young artists.

MISSION CONTROL
By creating a collaborative and diverse environment, we hope to elicit challenging and enlightening work from a variety of artists – work that embraces duality within the human condition and exposes what it’s like to step into someone else’s shoes. To help achieve this, we are committed to having at least 50% of all roles filled by women, people of colour, people with disability, trans and gender non-conforming people, and other members of historically or culturally marginalized communities that are not well represented on stage.

A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS
As a new company, we do not have immediate access to grants, government funding, or other forms of support that established organizations have. We DO have an amazing team of artists who have already banded together to help get our programming off the ground. Now, we need your help to achieve our artistic goals and produce work that will resonate with the broadest audience possible so we can contribute to the vibrant landscape of Australian theatre for years to come.

“Money, pardon the expression, is like manure. It’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around, encouraging young things to grow.” – Thornton Wilder

Ticket sales account for less than half of our operating budget, so any donations we receive will go directly toward the art we create and the artists we support. For GHOST QUARTET, your donations will go toward the venue rental, instruments used in the show (over 35 at last count!), artists, design costs, marketing materials, and more. We also have ongoing administrative costs such as insurance, accounting software, printing, and graphic design, but most importantly – your donation will be an investment in our future. Starting a new theatre company is daunting but also extremely rewarding, and your donation allows you to be with us from the start…the start of something new.

antipodes (/anˈtɪpədiːz/) noun:
1. Australia and New Zealand (used by inhabitants of the northern hemisphere);
2. the direct opposite of something.

Antipodes Theatre Company (ATC) seeks to provide a collaborative and diverse environment for producing professional theatre in Melbourne. Programming includes: full-length plays and musicals, the Ricochet Free Reading Series, workshops for professional artists, and youth programs.

We embrace challenging and enlightening work from a variety of artists. Work that focuses on duality within the human condition. Work that looks at situations from a unique angle or exposes what it’s like to step into someone else’s shoes. ATC was founded by New York City transplants who currently find themselves as close to the antipode of that location as they’re ever likely to get.

Finally, ATC strives for inclusive hiring practices through a commitment to at least 50% of all positions filled by women, people of color, people with disabilities, trans and gender non-conforming people, and other members of historically or culturally marginalized communities.

Current company members include: David Butler, Melissa David, Kristy Griffin, Brandon Pape, Chloe Towan, and Don Winsor
